ELMIRA, NY – Hartwick men's tennis improved to 3-0 for the first time in 42 years on Saturday with a 5-4 victory over Nazareth College (1-10, 1-2 E8) in a match played in Elmira, NY. With the score knotted at 4-4,
Tyler Adler (Pittsford, NY/East Rochester) came through with the clinching victory in the fifth singles flight, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2. The win for the Hawks is their first over the Golden Flyers since 2009. They are 3-0 for the first time since 1976.
The Hawks won two out of three doubles matches for a 2-1 advantage.
Nick Adamou (New Milford, CT/New Milford) and
Jack Steinman (North Haven, CT/North Haven) won in the second flight, 8-4, with
Tyler Adler (Pittsford, NY/East Rochester) and
Casey Serdiouk (Margaretville, NY/Margaretville Central) winning in the third, 8-2.
John Talbot (Middlesex, NY/Marcus Whitman) and
Nikola Nedeljkovic (Portland, OR/Sunset) were narrowly beaten in first doubles, 8-6.
Talbot and Steinman both won by identical 6-3, 6-1 scores in the first and fourth singles flights, respectively, as Hartwick took a 4-1 lead. The Golden Flyers answered in the second, third, and sixth flights to even the match at 4-4. Nedeljkovic took his match to a third set in the second flight but he fell, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Adler would win the first set of the deciding match, 6-1, before falling in the second, 7-5. He would close out the victory and seal the team win winning six of eight games in the third set.
Hartwick is back in action in Elmira tomorrow at 1 p.m. The Hawks play St. John Fisher College.
