HOUGHTON, NY – Hartwick used a seven-goal run in a 17-minute span in both halves to pull away from Houghton in a 13-6 victory on Saturday. The Hawks have now won four straight games and improve to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in the Empire 8 Conference. Houghton falls to 4-5 and 2-2.
Conference statistical leaders
Ashley Werner (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) and
Hailey Pooler (Adams Center, NY/South Jefferson) led the way for the Hawks in the win. Werner netted six goals to bring her season total to an Empire 8 high 43. Pooler dished out six assists for the second straight game. She leads the league in helpers with 29. Pooler also registered a goal on the day.
Jennifer Darasz (Gorham, ME/Gorham) and
GinaMarie Wilson (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) each recorded a pair of goals and an assist.
Minnie Schupp (Menands, NY/Shaker) and
Emma Knapp (Canandaigua, NY/Marcus Whitman) also scored.
The two teams traded leads five times in the opening half of play. The final time came with 6:55 left as Werner scored from Pooler to give Hartwick the lead for good. It marked the second tally in the big seven-goal spurt. The Hawks would score four times in the final 8:21 to take a 7-4 lead into halftime.
Three more tallies in the first 8:23 of the second half put the Hawks in front 10-4. Houghton scored two of the next three goals to get within five with 10:27 left, but the Hawks closed it out with two goals in the final 6:34.
Hartwick out-shot Houghton 40-23 in the game. The Hawks edged the Highlanders in ground balls, 30-27, and draw controls, 11-9.
Knapp would grab a game-high 10 draws in the game. She also had the team-high in ground balls with seven.
Ashley Egerter (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) tied for a game-high with five caused turnovers. She also contributed four ground balls.
Darasz and
Mattie Coffey (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) each accumulated four ground balls. Werner,
Emma Kaplan (Danbury, CT/Danbury), and
Carleigh Tarala (Tully, NY/Tully) each had three. Darasz, Kaplan, Knapp, Coffey, and Werner also had two caused turnovers apiece. Tarala made nine saves in the Hawks' cage.
Meagan Barry led Houghton with three goals. Cori Beck had a goal, an assist, nine ground balls, and five caused turnovers.
Hartwick hosts Sage on Wednesday, April 11 at Wright Stadium beginning at 4 p.m.
