Hawks Fall to SUNY Delhi, 2-1, in Home Opener

Final Score: Hartwick 1, SUNY Delhi 2

Venue: Oneonta, NY – Elmore Field

Records: Hartwick (0-3); SUNY Delhi (3-1)

Recap: Hartwick fell a goal short at home on Wednesday in a 2-1 loss to SUNY Delhi on Elmore Field. The visiting Broncos jumped ahead in the 23rd minute as they took advantage of a miscue in the back. Brody Rettle pounced on a loose ball 22 yards away from goal that beat Hartwick keeper Jack Riordan (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg) to his right for a 1-0 lead. The Hawks came back less than nine minutes later as 'Wick's Heitor Ferriera (East Williston, NY/The Wheatley School) played a through ball for Mikeil Legarde (Manila, Philippines/Hong Kong International School). Legarde got the ball past Delhi goalkeeper Marcos Andrino at the top of the box but Andrino brought him down in the process and the referee awarded a penalty kick. Troy Amegashie (Accra, Ghana/Tema International School) stepped up and buried the ensuing kick from the spot high to Andrino's left to tie the score and give the Hawks their first goal of 2018. The lead would last for roughly 28 minutes when the Broncos took the lead for good in the 63rd minute. Following a save from Riordan, Mitch Reed played the ball across the goal mouth to Matthew Cassidy who put the ball just over the line for what would prove to be the game-winner. Legarde finished the game with three shots to lead the Hawks. Amegashie added two. Riordan eight saves.

John Scott Quotes: "Tonight is the best we've played to date and again the coaches have taken plenty of positives from the game despite the 2-1 loss. There is no question that our fitness level has improved and because of this we are seeing that we have players who can be dangerous. I want to give special praise to Jack Riordan who made some very good saves during the game. I also want to praise our guys collectively for a superb physical effort and to highlight the fact that we only had 12 players available for tonight's game. We're a works in progress, but progress is being made in small steps. We'll now regroup, and we'll talk about what can help improve what we're doing before our next game on Monday at Penn State Harrisburg."

Up Next: The Hawks play Penn State Harrisburg on Monday, September 17 at 1 p.m. The game is being played at In the Net Sports Complex in Palmyra, PA.
