NEWBURGH, NY – Hawks took two opponents to super tie-breakers in singles and one doubles team fell by the narrowest of margins on Tuesday, but host Mount St. Mary won a 9-0 decision against the 'Wick women's tennis team.
Victoria Wilson (Trenton, NY/Trenton Catholic) and
Skylar Watts (Rome, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) came close to victory at first doubles in their match against Knights Michelle Carnevale and Victoria Clay. Carnevale and Clay outlasted the Hawks in the race to eight games by a final count of 8-6.
McKenzie Rider (Salamanca, NY/Salamanca) battled back after falling into a one set to none hole in fifth singles in her match against Jessalyn Goetz. Goetz took the first set, 6-4, before Rider won the second in a tie-breaker, 7-6 (7-2). In the super tie-breaker to 10 points, Goetz would score the victory, 10-3.
In the sixth flight,
Alyssa Wadsworth (Ilion, NY/Central Valley Academy) lost the first set, 6-1, to Grace Monahan. Wadsworth evened the contest taking the second set, 6-4, forcing the super tie-breaker. There, Monahan would edge out Wadsworth, 10-7, to claim the victory.
Hartwick returns home for a home match on Saturday at Wilber Park. The Hawks host Marywood University beginning at 1 p.m.
