HOUGHTON, NY – Hartwick cut a two-goal deficit to one in the second half but the Hawks couldn't find the tying goal in a 2-1 defeat to Houghton on Saturday at Burke Field. The loss drops the Hawks to 2-9 overall while the victory for the Highlanders ups their overall mark to 3-4-5.
Houghton would control play in the first half as they held a 10-1 advantage in shots. The Hawks, however, would weather the storm as they entered halftime with the game still deadlocked at 0-0.
All of the day's scoring would happen in a 7:16 window early in the second half. Daniel Bussey would break the ice in the 52
nd minute as he redirected a free kick from Ben Miller for a 1-0 Houghton lead. The Highlanders added to their total in the 57
th minute as Elijah Steffan converted his free kick from 22 yards away.
Hartwick quickly answered just over three minutes later.
Joey Bertone (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) walked in alone with Houghton goalkeeper Caleb Loew and beat him low for his first collegiate goal.
Jake Zona (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) earned the assist on the play.
The Hawks would manage one more shot the rest of the way. It came off the foot of
Troy Amegashie (Accra, Ghana/Tema International School) but it was high of the target. They also generated three corners but could not produce the equalizer.
Hartwick keeper
Britt Reisman (Vero Beach, FL/Saint Edward's School) made three saves in 90 minutes of action. Loew made one stop, on a Bertone effort in the first half.
The Hawks are back in action on Wednesday, October 16 when they visit SUNY Delhi for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
