Men’s Soccer Drops Non-Conference Match With Wilkes on Elmore

ONEONTA, NY – Wilkes scored a pair of goals in each half to defeat the Hartwick Hawks 4-0 on Wednesday night under the lights of Elmore. 'Wick was only out-shot by the Colonels by a 16-12 margin and the Hawks held an 8-1 edge in corners, but they came away with nothing to show for it. The Hawks slip to 2-8 on the season. The Colonels are now 6-3-2.

The game would be scoreless through the opening 25 minutes of action. The Colonels had a chance to break through in the 19th minute after being awarded a penalty kick, but Kyle Bentz's effort smacked off the crossbar.

Seven and a half minutes later, the Colonels were in front. A free kick near the corner of the Hartwick box by Matthew Horwedel was sent to the far post where Shane Henehan cleaned up after a scramble for the 1-0 lead.

Less than nine minutes later, Cole Hefner picked the ball off from Hartwick keeper Britt Reisman (Vero Beach, FL/Saint Edward's School) and tucked it into an empty net for a 2-0 lead before halftime.

Early in the second half, the Hawks had their most dangerous chance of the night until that point when Troy Amegashie (Accra, Ghana/Tema International School) beat a few Colonel defenders, and sent a ball directly across the goal mouth that couldn't find a teammate's foot.

Hefner picked up his second of the game roughly four minutes later as he received a pass from Anthony Lazzareschi behind the Hawk defense and beat Reisman to his left for a three-goal advantage.

Amegashie had another dangerous cross in front with approximately nine minutes left that nobody could get on the end of. Joey Bertone (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) had a shot on target that forced on off-balance save from Nick Kinzler shortly after. Jake Zona (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) had the last good chance for the Hawks with seven and a half minutes left, but his shot zipped just past the far post.

Zona and Ansh Budwar (Pune, India/Akash International School) each had three shots for Hartwick. Bertone would contribute two.

Reisman ended the contest with three saves in the Hartwick goal. Russell Rauh made five stops in the first half for Wilkes. Kinzler had three saves in the second half.

Tonight was the last game of the Hawks' four-game home stand. They hit the road on Saturday to play Houghton College beginning at 4 p.m.
