UTICA, NY –
Kainen Francis-Thompson (Hogansburg, NY/Massena),
David Demand (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango), and
Sam Ferguson (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) combined for 12 goals and five assists and keeper
C.J. Alesandrini (Schenectady, NY/Colonie) stopped 16 of 19 shots on target as Hartwick rolled to a 14-3 victory at Utica College on Wednesday at Charles Gaetano Stadium. With the win, the Hawks shake off their first conference loss last Saturday and improve to 9-2 overall and 5-1 in the league. They have now won nine of their last 10 games.
Francis-Thompson led the Hawks with five goals. Demand added four goals and two assists with Ferguson netting three and delivering a game-high three assists.
The Hawks registered the first eight goals in the game and they took an 8-0 lead into halftime. They would win the opening draw and Ferguson found the net from just 13 seconds into the game.
Tyler Coleman (Round Lake, NY/Shenendehowa), Ferguson, and Demand added first-quarter tallies. Lind and Ferguson would finish the quarter with a pair of assists.
Demand opened the second quarter with his second goal after 1:52. Francis-Thompson then scored three consecutive goals in a span of 7:12 and the Hawks held an eight-goal advantage. Demand and
Derek Chandler (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) had assists in the quarter.
The two teams traded goals in the third quarter through the first 10 and a half minutes.
Tim Watson (Wrentham, MA/King Philip Regional) and Francis-Thompson recorded the 'Wick goals. Demand finished off the period with his third tally of the day for an 11-2 lead.
Demand contributed his fourth goal 1:26 into the fourth quarter. After Utica netted its final goal of the day at the 10:57 mark, Ferguson and Francis-Thompson closed out the scoring.
Alesandrini, with his 16 saves, finished the day with a save percentage of .842. He stopped five shots in both the first and second quarters.
The Hawks fired 55 shots in the game to Utica's 32. They also earned 34 ground balls to the Pioneers' 22. Hartwick would win 12-of-21 face-offs in the contest.
Garrison Wojtas (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) and
Nick Couvaris (Seaford, NY/Seaford) each tied for a game-high with six ground balls. Demand added four and
Zack Orth (North Haven, CT/North Haven) grabbed three. Nine Hawks registered at least one caused turnover as they finished with 16 in total.
Andrew Wright (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) led the way with four, Couvaris added three, and Francis-Thompson and Ferguson each had two.
Dylan Reynolds (Tappan, NY/Tappan Zee) won 6-of-9 face-off attempts. Orth went 6-for-11.
Hartwick will look for its second straight win on Saturday when it hosts Alfred University at Wright Stadium beginning at 1 p.m.
