ALFRED, NY – The Hartwick women's lacrosse team got back on track Friday evening, shutting out Alfred on the road, 21-0, in a game that saw 11 Hawks put forth multiple point efforts. With the win the Hawks move back to .500 overall at 7-7 and one game above even in the Empire 8, at 4-3. Depending on this weekend's conference results, 'Wick may have a winner-take-all game against Stevens next Saturday for the final Empire 8 Tournament spot. Alfred's rough year continued today, as they fell to 1-11 (0-6 E8).
The Hawks scored four times in the first ten minutes, led by Amy Tracy (Smithtown, NY/Florida Southern College) from free position just 16 seconds into the game. Hailey Pooler (Adams Center, NY/South Jefferson) was the primary helper on Jennifer Darasz's (Gorham, ME/Gorham) goal at 28:35, and Darasz became the assister on GinaMarie Wilson's (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) 38th of the season at 25:56. Michaela McKernan (Branchville, NJ/High Point Regional) got on the board for the final Hawk goal of the first ten minutes, courtesy a pass from Pooler to make it 4-0. Darasz and Tracy connected for the next tally at 19:52, with Darasz playing the role of finisher; that was followed by unassisted goals from Pooler at 18:57 and Wilson at 14:06, who also scored the next goal at 12:41 off of a pass from Emma Knapp (Canandaigua, NY/Marcus Whitman).
Emily Schaub (Brewster, NY/Brewster) had the next two Hartwick goals 1:05 apart, depositing passes from Tracy (at 12:06) and Knapp (at 11:01) into the net to bring the Hawks lead to double-digits. 'Wick scored four more times in the final third of the first period, taking a commanding 14-0 lead into the break. Schaub assisted a Tracy tally at 9:15, McKernan helped out Darasz at 8:07, defenseman Katie Weaver (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) scored her first collegiate goal off of a pass from Pooler with five minutes left in the half, and Knapp put one home just under the wire from Tracy, converting with eight ticks on the clock.
Cassie Durkin (Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville Dewitt) restarted the scoring in the second half, scoring from free position 3:05 in. Two defensemen linked up for the next tally, as Carly Baird (Watervliet, NY/Shaker) scored the first of her career from Weaver at 25:01, making it 16-0. The next Hartwick goal was also a collegiate first, as McKernan assisted on a Gina Grauer (West Lawn, PA/Wilson) conversion. Defenseman Emma Kaplan (Danbury, CT/Danbury) had her first of the season next, unassisted at 17:20, and Jennifer Paszko (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) earned the first point of her career via an assist on Baird's second career goal at 9:14. Kayla Tracey (Bardonia, NY/Brewster) got in on the goal-scoring action with an even five minutes to go, finishing a free position attempt, and then helped out on the final goal of the game, a finish by Durkin with just four seconds left.
Tracy led all players with five points, via two goals and three assists, tacking on four ground balls, three draw controls, and tying with many for the team high of two caused turnovers to boot. Darasz and Pooler had four points apiece; Darasz had a hat trick on three shots as well as an assist, while Pooler had a goal on three shots, three assists, a team-high six ground balls, and two caused turnovers. Four more Hawks had three points each. Wilson had a hat trick (bringing her to 40 goals for the season and 50 points, the latter of which is tied with Pooler for the team lead), two ground balls, two draw controls, and a caused turnover and Knapp had a goal, two assists, a tie for the game high of six draw controls, four ground balls, and two caused turnovers. McKernan had a goal, two assists, two caused turnovers, a draw control, and a ground ball, and Schaub had two goals on four shots, one assist, two ground balls, and two caused turnovers. Goaltender Ashley Jablonowski (Levittown, NY/Island Trees) continued her very strong play of late, posting the first shutout of her career in a ten-save effort, as well as scooping three ground balls and causing a turnover.
The Hawks dominated in the shot department, more than doubling up the Saxons, 36-14. They also had 21 turnovers to the home team's 30, 28 ground balls to 20 and 12 draw controls to nine. On clear attempts, 'Wick converted at an 11-of-13 clip while Alfred was just 6-of-19.
The Saxons' Paige Rowlee had the game-high ground ball total, with nine (as well as a caused turnover). Madison Latranyi had a devilish line of six ground balls, a game-high six draw controls, and a game-high six turnovers caused, also shooting the ball three times. Taylor Miller had a significant impact on the game, too, taking a game-high eight shots, scooping three ground balls, causing a turnover, and controlling one draw.
Hartwick plays their final home game of the season next time out, taking on SUNY Poly in a non-conference affair on Wednesday, April 24. Opening draw is set for 4 p.m.
