ONEONTA, NY – A goal from Haydyn Zagorski in the 55
th minute would be the lone goal as visiting Penn State Harrisburg topped Hartwick's men's soccer team 1-0 in the opening game of the Division III Men's Mayor's Cup Saturday on Elmore Field.
The game was a rematch from last season in which the Lions came away with an 8-0 victory. This time was different as the Hawks competed step for step with the Lions for 90 minutes. The Lions would finish the contest with a 13-7 edge in shots.
After a 0-0 deadlock through the opening 45 minutes, the Lions broke through as Toma Nichik played a short pass to Aaron Cummings at the top of the Hartwick box. Cummings slipped a pass through to Zagorski who fired home past 'Wick keeper
Aidan Wholihan (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's Annapolis) for what would prove to be the winner.
The Hawks pressed for the tying goal in the final twenty minutes as they outshot the Lions by a 5-1 margin.
Ansh Budwar (Pune, India/Akash International School) came close to pulling off an improbable shot as his overhead effort from the corner of the 18 near the goal line traveled over Lion keeper Nicholas Guglielmett toward the far post but it ran out of spin and fell short of the target.
Later with under seven minutes left,
Jimmy Noel (Cap Haitian, Haiti/Baldwin) and
Joey Bertone (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) each had long-range efforts to force saves from Guglielmett. Noel's final shot from distance as the final seconds ticked down sailed high over the bar.
Wholihan finished the match with three saves for the Hawks. Guglielmett stopped two in the clean sheet.
The Hawks wrap up Mayor's Cup play tomorrow on Elmore as they host St. Lawrence, which dropped a 4-2 decision at SUNY Oneonta today.
