ONEONTA, NY – St. Lawrence received two goals from All-Tournament pick Aidan Callahan in the first 14:07 of action and added a third goal 10 minutes into the second half to earn a 3-0 win over the Hartwick Hawks on day two of the Mayor's Cup.
The Saints got on the scoreboard in the 5
th minute after Matthew Lawlor served a ball from the far sideline into the 'Wick penalty area. Callahan was there to head it home for the early lead.
In the 15
th minute, the Hawks were whistled for a hand ball in the box which resulted in a penalty kick. Callahan stepped up and put it away past Hartwick goalkeeper
Britt Reisman (Vero Beach, FL/Saint Edward's School) to double the Saints' lead.
The Hawks had their best scoring chance of the day following
Jimmy Noel's (Cap Haitian, Haiti/Baldwin) free kick from midfield. The ball glanced off a Saint defender's head and
Troy Amegashie (Accra, Ghana/Tema International School) collected the ball with his chest. With his back to goal he shot the ball backwards towards the far post but it inched just wide of the mark.
In the second half, the Saints struck in the 56
th minute as Andrew Terhune headed in Marvin Sibanda's corner kick to give the Saints their third goal and close out the scoring.
The Saints held a 20-4 edge in shots, including a 9-1 margin the second half. Reisman finished the match making eight saves. Ben Kelty made one stop for St. Lawrence.
Amegashie and
Jake Zona (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) were both selected to the All-Tournament Team for 'Wick. Oneonta, with victories in both matches against St. Lawrence and Penn State Harrisburg, won the cup title. Witman Hernandez and Scott Cebollero, both of the Red Dragons, were selected as the MVP's.
Hartwick next plays on Saturday, September 14 at Bard College beginning at 2 p.m.
