Volleyball Wins Fifth In A Row Via Sweep of Keuka

KEUKA PARK, NY – New team. No problem. The Hartwick volleyball team finished their first Empire 8 roadtrip of the year this afternoon, defeating Keuka 3-0. The Hawks won set one 25-18, followed by a 25-21 set two win, and finished the match off winning set three 25-16. The win over the Empire 8 newcomer Keuka makes Hartwick 13-2 on the season and 3-1 in Empire 8 play, while Keuka is now 6-12 overall and 2-14 in conference play.

The Hawks came out soaring high in the first set starting off the match 6-2. A set of runs that the Hawks ultimately got the best of at the end was started by the Wolves that got the game to 10-7. A seven-point run with Sarah Petz (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) behind the service line sent the Hawks lead to 17-11. The serving mojo from Petz stayed around and Kayley Ericson (Franklin, CT/Norwich Free Academy) followed her teammate up with a six-point run of her own from behind the line. An offensive error from the Wolves and a Colette Maloney (Williston Park, NY/Mineola) kill sealed set one at 25-18.

Set two, like many of the Hawks' previous sets this year, was very back and forth. Domination of the net from Dell Potts (Niverville, NY/Ichabod Crane) and Staecia Silofau (Kapolei, HI/Maryknoll) kept the scores close. It was not until the scoreboard read 15-15 that the Hawks began to fly away, going on a 4-0 run and then getting the game to 24-20 just minutes later. A Silofau kill closed the door for the second set and the Hawks took a two-set advantage on the Wolves.

Set three started where the Hawks left off in the previous set and complete domination followed. 'Wick led the way the whole set and found themselves on top of the match three sets to none.

Silofau led the Hawks with 13 kills on a .400 hitting percentage, while Toria Betelak (North Syracuse, NY/Liverpool) followed with 10 kills on a .667 hitting percentage. Maloney and Petz had 11 and 10 digs, respectively, while Ericson and Braelyn Hornick (Candor, NY/Candor) split setting duties with 22 assists for the former and 14 for the latter.

'Wick will be back at it Wednesday, October 13th at 7 p.m., when they take on Utica in Lambros Arena.
