KEUKA PARK, NY – Despite outshooting the host Wolves by a 17-8 margin, the Hartwick women's soccer team had to settle for a scoreless double-overtime draw in their Empire 8 opener with Keuka. The Hawks are now 2-1-3 on the season and 0-0-1 in conference play, while the Wolves are 0-5-2 overall and also 0-0-1 in E8 matchups.
'Wick was all over their hosts throughout the first 25 minutes, earning four corners and shooting six times (including twice on target). They could not find the back of the net, though, and despite a 9-3 shot advantage in the first half the game remained scoreless at the break. Play was more even in the second 45 minutes, with shots at five apiece, but again neither team could break through before an overtime period was needed.
Hartwick had the better of play in the first overtime, earning a corner kick and forcing two saves by Keuka keeper Jessica Pegg. They had one more effort towards goal in the second overtime before the day ended scoreless after 110 minutes.
Head Coach Brian Knapp had the following to say about his team's efforts today: "I thought we did well to get after them in the first 25 minutes. Unfortunately throughout the 110 minutes we lacked a finishing touch and didn't capitalize off our chances. We've got a very young squad that's battling to stay healthy and needs to continue to adjust to the college level."
Lexie Thompson (Schenectady, NY/Niskayuna) led all contestants with four shots, while Julia Bono (West Milford, NJ/West Milford Township) and Hannah Bochniak (Barneveld, NY/Holland Patent) had three tries apiece. Sara Staup (Woodinville, WA/Woodinville) played all 110 minutes in net, making three saves for her third career clean sheet.
'Wick is off until next Saturday, when they have their conference home opener against St. John Fisher at 2 p.m.
