ONEONTA, NY – The Hartwick tennis team saw their winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon by a worthy opponent. Defending Empire 8 Champion Nazareth took down the Hawks by an 8-1 score, moving to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in conference as a result. 'Wick is now 3-2 on the year and 1-1 in the Empire 8.
Ryann Ashby (Malta, NY/Ballston Spa) and Val Kohberger (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse Academy) earned Hartwick's only point of the day, at second pairing. The two took down Lauren Carr and Lily Bulkeley by an 8-3 score.
Despite failing to earn a single singles point, 'Wick put forth a good effort and won the first set in three of their matchups. Ashby grabbed the first stanza of her second singles matchup 6-3 before succumbing by 6-3 and 6-1 scores the next two sets. Victoria Wilson (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Catholic Academy won her first set at number three by a 7-6 score before falling 6-2 and 10-5 in sets two and three, respectively. At fourth singles, Kohberger earned a set one win by a 6-2 score but ultimately lost 6-3, 6-4 in the next two sets.
The Hawks take off until next Friday, September 24, when they host Cortland at 3 p.m. in a non-conference matchup.
