ONEONTA, NY – The Hartwick men's soccer team put up the program's most complete performance as a Division III side in tonight's season opener, shellacking visiting Marywood by a score of 6-0. The scoreline represents the program's largest shutout since 2006, when the Hawks also won by a score of 6-0.
Tyler Muir (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) got the scoring going early, pouncing on a ball that Marywood keeper Alex Russo could not handle and sending it into a yawning net in the fifth minute. Jimmy Noel (Cap Haitian, Haiti/Baldwin) followed under seven minutes later with a wondergoal in the 11th. Muir crossed the ball from the right side of the field to just inside the top of the box, where Noel jumped, twisted, and connected with his body nearly parallel to the ground, sending the ball just out of reach of the keeper into the top left corner.
The scoring party continued in the 20th minute with some more direct help from the Pacers defense. Jake Zona (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) sent one into the box that deflected off a Marywood back and into the far corner for the 3-0 differential. Ansh Budhwar (Delhi, India/Akash International School) picked up his first collegiate goal with the final tally of the half. In the 40th minute, he caught Russo napping and punched one over his head from about 35 yards out to stretch the Hawks lead to four.
There was no scoring after that until the 72nd minute, thanks in part to a Jackson Gilstrap diving penalty save in the 48th minute. Zona broke that drought all by himself, sending a free kick from about 25 yards out past the wall and a diving Russo and into the bottom right corner of the net. He then secured the brace in the 86th, taking a short ball from Jim Mahony (Bournemouth, England/Bournemouth Collegiate) and slotting it past the keeper on the break for the night's final goal.
Brady Cummings (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham Wading River) could not quite get on the scoresheet, but he did lead all players with four shots. Zona and Noel were not far behind him with three tries apiece. Jodi Johnson (Seaford, DE/Sussex Technical) got the start in net, seeing no action through the first half. Gilstrap guarded the goal in the second half, making three saves (including the penalty) to secure the team clean sheet.
The Hawks held a clear statistical advantage, outshooting the Pacers 13 to 3 (6-3 on target). They also had a significant lead in corners, at 6 to 2.
'Wick returns to action this Saturday, September 4, when they travel to Susquehanna University for a 5:30 p.m. kickoff.
