HOUGHTON, NY – New venue, same story. The Hartwick women's tennis team secured their second win in 24 hours on Saturday, beating Empire 8 foe Houghton by a 6-3 score. The Hawks continue their renaissance with a 5-2 overall record and 2-1 conference record (surpassing last season's total), while the Highlanders drop to 2-4 overall and 2-1 in the Empire 8.
The Hawks took two of three available doubles points to start the day on the right foot. Victoria Wilson (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Catholic Academy) and Jade Killikelly (Jamaica, NY/The Mary Louis Academy) did what they do best at top pairing, securing an 8-7(4) victory. Colleen Marsh (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) and Jess Sexton (South Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls) picked up the other doubles victory at third pairing via an 8-3 decision.
Killikelly kept it rolling at top singles, defeating Elise Swanson 6-1, 6-1, while Ryann Ashby (Malta, NY/Ballston Spa) had a more dramatic 5-7, 6-4, 12-10 victory at #2 singles. Sexton grabbed a three-set win as well, as her 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 decision came at fifth singles. Marsh rounded out the Hartwick scoring at sixth pairing, getting by Hialeah Johnson in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2.
The Hawks look to stay hot next Friday, as they welcome Russell Sage to town for a 4 p.m. match in Wilber Park.
