ONEONTA, NY – Three second-half goals in 15 minutes were all that was needed for the Hartwick women's soccer team in Saturday's Erinn K. Brozman Cup opener against Nichols, as the Hawks downed the visiting Bison 3-0. The win moves the Hawks to 2-0 on the season while the visitors drop to 0-1.
The speedy Gianna Cacciola (Wading River, NY/Shoreham Wading River) was coming off a two-goal, two-assist game in Wednesday's opener against Wells and had quite a few chances to add to that in the first half, but she could not quite find her scoring touch today. She had the game's first shot in the sixth minute after she was sprung on a breakaway, but keeper Adie Hughes made the save.
The best chance for the remainder of the half also went to Cacciola, who was again sent on a breakaway in the 38th minute. Her first shot was saved by Hughes; Cacciola found the rebound and had an empty net to shoot into but sent it over the crossbar. At the half, the score remained unbroken.
Cacciola had another great opportunity to score in the first minute of the second half after Rory Richard (Barneveld, NY/Holland Patent) crossed one into the penalty area, but she could not quite get the proper footing and the ball rolled past her. Cacciola again found herself in all alone in the 56th minute; this time she got it past the keeper but sent the ball wide of the goal.
Madi McGuire (Goshen, NY/Goshen) finally got the party started in the 62nd minute, with the assist to Julia Collado (Whitehouse Station, NJ/Huntedon). Collado sent a cross left-footed into the box that rolled past a couple people before McGuire smashed it into the top right corner for her first collegiate goal. Richard had the next tally in the 74th minute, as Cacciola sent a ball forward that Richard caught up to and slotted low past the keeper (also for her first collegiate goal). The icing on the cake came from McGuire, who earned her brace by stealing the ball from a Bison defender, dribbling in, and beating Hughes high.
Cacciola led all Hawks with four shots in the game, followed closely by McGuire at three. Richard, Mia Capanna (Los Angeles, CA/Palisades Charter), and Nicole Casab (Utica, NY/T.R. Proctor) all shot twice. Sara Staup (Woodinville, WA/Woodinville) played all 90 minutes in goal, making two saves to earn her second clean sheet in her second career start.
The Hawks had a healthy shot advantage all evening, outshooting the Bison 6-1 in the first half and 10-3 in the second for a 16-4 difference overall. They also led in corners, 8 to 4.
'Wick has a quick turnaround for their second game of the Brozman Cup, which comes tomorrow at 3 p.m. against Smith.
