Men’s Soccer Picks Up 1-0 Win in Final Regular Season Home Match

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Hawks scored in the 36th minute and that tally was all that was needed as they secured the 1-0 win over Sage in their final regular season home contest.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score:  Hartwick 1, Sage 0
  • Location:  Oneonta, N.Y.
  • Records:  Hartwick (4-8-2, 2-4-1 Empire 8), Sage (7-5-2, 4-2-0 Empire 8)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • The Hawks put pressure on the visiting Gators all throughout the first half, outshooting the visiting squad 6-3.
  • Both teams put two shots on goal in the first half, but it would be Hartwick's tally in the 36th minute that would prove to be the difference maker.
  • The Hawks capitalized on one of their two corners in the half to earn the goal.
  • While the initial cross off the corner from Jim Mahony (Bournemouth, England) did not result in the goal, his hustle off the rebound gave the opportunity Hartwick needed.
  • Joey Bertone (Jamesville, N.Y.) attacked the second cross and redirected it inside the right post for his first goal of the season to give Hartwick the 1-0 lead.
  • Sage regrouped after halftime and the two squads matched each other in both shots and corner kick opportunities.
  • Hartwick's defense cleared every subsequent Sage attack and keeper Jackson Gilstrap (Bethlehem, Pa.) recorded two saves in the second half.
  • As time expired, the 1-0 lead would hold for the Hawks as they picked up a key Empire 8 win.
  • Gilstrap recorded the shutout and picked up his first win of the season while recording four saves across 90 minutes of work.
