ONEONTA, NY – The Men's Basketball team was narrowly defeated at home by Houghton 57-63 Saturday afternoon., dropping Hartwick to 1-19 (1-11) on the season. Houghton improved to 4-19 (4-10).
Hartwick built up a 6 point lead in the first six and a half minutes of the game on back to back jumpers from
Anthony Girard and
Nick Eiler. After Houghton brought the game back to within 1 at 15-16 with just over 10 minutes to play, the Hawks broke out for 9 straight points and take a 10 point lead over the visiting Highlanders with 7 minutes to go. Basketball is certainly a game of runs and Houghton went on their own 10-0 run to knot the game at 27 with 2:30 to play. Neither team could connect on a basket the rest of the way, and the only point came from
Sammuel Prosper's free throw with :35 left in the half to end a 5 minute scoring drought for the home team.
Houghton grabbed a 3 point lead after a 6-2 run to open the second half, but
Kevin Felasco tied it up with a long range shot at the 17:10 mark. Unfortunately, another scoring drought plagued the Hawks, this time lasting 3 minutes while Houghton built an 8 point edge that Wick was never able to recover from. Hartwick kept the game close enough to feel that they could jump into the lead at any time, but the shots didn't fall when they needed. Houghton's near 50% shooting in the second half proved too much as Hartwick managed just 31%.
Kevin Felasco led all scorers with 16 points.
Cooper Francis recorded his third double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Nick Eiler finished the game with 10 points of his own.
Hartwick will host Sage College on Tuesday at 5:30PM in the season's final scheduled home game, before traveling to Keuka and Elmira next weekend.
