ONEONTA, NY – The Hartwick Men's Lacrosse team traveled across the street to their rival at Oneonta All College Field and came out with the 11-9 win. The Hawks were down 5-9 in the third quarter before scoring 6 unanswered to secure their second win of the season (2-1). The loss dropped Oneonta to 1-4.
Dylan Ferguson,
Kainen Francis-Thompson and
Pete Conley each scored twice for the Hawks, while
James Schneider,
Tyler Coleman,
Cooper Francis,
Garrett Frost and
Matthew Locasto netted one.
Kyle McKee went wire to wire in goal, making 13 saves on the afternoon.
Hartwick found themselves down 2-0 less than 5 minutes into the game, thanks to Oneonta goals just a minute apart from each other at the 12 minute mark.
Daniel Beltran won the next faceoff and the Hawks put up their first three shots of the game during the possession, but two saves from Oneonta kept Wick off the board. However, a turnover by the hosts on the clear attempt led to
James Schneider getting Hartwick on the board at 9:11 to play in the quarter. After trading goals, Oneonta had the last tally of the quarter, taking a 4-2 lead into the 2
nd.
Tyler Coleman's goal at 13:31 brought the Hawks to within 1 at 3-4, but they struggled in the quarter to get shots on goal and Oneonta's keeper saved all 4 of the period. Oneonta was able to extend their lead considerably, scoring the quarter's final 4 goals to take an 8-3 lead into the break.
After regrouping, it was Hartwick's turn to dominate a quarter, and they did just that with 4 of their own goals to just 1 for the Red Dragons. With the Oneonta lead trimmed to 9-7 at the start of the final quarter, the game was there for either team to take.
Hartwick took advantage of the 3
rd quarter momentum and scored the periods only goals; 4 to be exact to shore up the come from behind victory. It was strong defense that forced 6 Oneonta turnovers and prevented 2 clears for the hosts to keep the ball with the offense. As a team, Hartwick collected 10 ground balls in the quarter and turned the ball over just twice.
An all-around team effort, Hartwick recorded 8 assists on the 11 goals, with
Kainen Francis-Thompson and
Dylan Ferguson each having 3 and
Shayne Kerrigan adding 2. Hartwick recorded 30 ground balls to just 13 for the hosts, and won 15 of the 22 face-offs in the game. The Hawks were 2-6 on extra man opportunities.
Hartwick will remain on the road for their next contest, traveling up to Hamilton College on Tuesday for a 4:30pm non-conference game.
