Women’s Lacrosse Drops Close Game Against Smith College

ONEONTA, NY – On one of the colder days the spring season has brought, the Hartwick women's lacrosse team hosted the Pioneers of Smith College after snow postponed the first scheduled matchup earlier this year.  The Pioneers came out on top 12-9 despite the late rally by Hartwick that nearly extended the game.  The Hawks fall to 3-3 on the season while Smith improved to 5-4.

Despite Hartwick getting on the scoreboard first, the Pioneers scored 3 unanswered to take a 3-1 lead into the second quarter.  Just two goals were scored in the 2nd, one by each team, which sent the teams to the locker room with the score 4-2 in favor of the visitors.

The second half was a much different story, as a combined 15 goals were scored.  The first 3 were netted by Smith College, but Hartwick's Emily Schaub and Hanna Goodreau snapped that run to keep the game within reach at 7-4.  Smith's Gia Arancio scored 2 of her team high 4 after those two, with a Hartwick goal from Emily Madigan sandwiched in between.

Despite the 9-5 lead going into the final quarter, Hartwick rallied back to pull within 2 late in the game.  Goodreau opened the 4th with a goal 20 seconds in and later scored with 4:06 on the clock to bring her team within 2 at 11-9.  That goal capped a 3 goal run from Hartwick off the sticks of Madigan and Katrina Marten.  Unfortunately, Hartwick was unable to pick up the needed goals to get the game closer and eventually fell 12-9.

Hanna Goodreau led the way with 3 goals, followed by Katrina Marten and Emily Madigan with 2 apiece.  Kristen Vaccarelli and Emily Schaub netted the other two for Hartwick.  Gabrielle Stringer assisted twice and Marten once.  Samantha Miller stopped 10 shots in 60 minutes.

The Hawks will open E8 play this weekend when they travel to Keuka College.  Saturday's game is slated for a 1:00PM start.
