Women’s Lacrosse Drops Season Opener at New Paltz

NEW PALTZ, NY – The Women's Lacrosse team suffered an 8-14 loss at SUNY New Paltz this afternoon to open the 2022 campaign.  The Hawks had five different goal scorers and finished with 20 shots in the game.  New Paltz grabbed their second win, moving to 2-1 on the young season.

The Hawks got on the board first, with Claudia Pollaro getting the unassisted goal at 9:02 on the clock in the first.  The home team evened the game just 2 minutes later, but Hartwick's Gabrielle Stringer and Kristin Vaccarelli scored the next two just 40 seconds apart from each other to give Hartwick a 3-1 edge with 6:19 left.  New Paltz scored one more before the end of the quarter, leaving Hartwick with a 3-2 edge going into the second.

New Paltz came out and scored 3 straight to gain a 5-3 lead before Emily Madigan netted her first of the game to pull within 1.  The teams traded goals to close the half, with Katrina Marten adding her name to the list of scorers for the Hawks.

The second half is where New Paltz pulled away, outscoring the Hawks 8-3 in the final 30 minutes of play.  Madigan, Vaccarelli and Marten added goals to their totals before the final whistle of the afternoon.  Samantha Miller played all 60 minutes in goal, stopping 5 shots.   Wick finished 13-18 on clear attempts, scooped 8 ground balls, and caused 7 turnovers on the afternoon.

Hartwick will be back in action for their home opener on Wednesday when they take on SUNY Poly.  The contest is scheduled to begin at 5pm in Wright Stadium.
