ONEONTA, NY – After a week off, the Hawks returned to action this afternoon when they took on the Golden Flyers of Nazareth College at home on Oyaron Hill. Although Hartwick stayed close and within striking distance, they ultimately fell 10-17. The Hawks dropped to 5-5 on the year and 2-2 in Empire 8 conference play, while the Golden Flyers moved to 5-7 on the year and 3-1 in Empire 8 play.
Nazareth opened up the scoring just 30 seconds into the contest, almost in sync with mother nature opening up the clouds.
Samantha Miller had a huge save with 11:30 left in the first when she met one of the Golden Flyers on the doorstep and seconds later she was faced with her first free position of the day and also won that battle. The Golden Flyers answered
Miller's back-to-back big saves with two goals, but she once again showed she could stop the Nazareth attackers when she stepped up and made another big free position save. Just 20 seconds later off a ground ball, Nazareth netted their fourth goal of the day.
Kristen Vaccarelli who started the scoring for the Hawks her counterpart
Katrina Marten found her from when she cut down onto the Nazareth doorstep and found the twine with 8:03 left in the first period. Nazareth went on a 5 goal run to end the first, finishing the opening period with a 9-1 lead.
Miller once again showed off her skills when she had another one of her big saves to open up the second quarter.
Ellie Masterpole then beat her defender down the alley and stuck her bounce shot five-hole to make the game 10-2 with 10:31 left in the half. The Golden Flyers would answer the Wick goal with two of their own and make the game 12-2.
Gabrielle Stringer scored her first of the day with 5:45 left in the half and got the game to 12-3.
Emily Schaub scored the Hawks first free position goal with 3:15 left in the half as she stung it top right corner. A big save from
Miller off another Nazareth free position sent the teams into Halftime with Nazareth leading 13-4.
The Hawks came out of break looking to get hot, and it was
Miller who tried to get that spark going. Faced with a Nazareth attacker on the crease, she stuffed the shot and started the clear. Unfortunately, a failed clear and a Hartwick turnover led to the Golden Flyers took tallying three more.
Schaub would later take on her defender and fired a shot over the Nazareth keeper's head to make the score 16-5 with 3:48 left in the third period.
The Hawks showed they were not going to quit when
Vaccarelli scored a goal with 14:24 left in the game and got the game to 16-6.
Vaccarelli stayed hot when she won the draw control straight to
Masterpole who scooped up the ground ball and found
Emily Madigan wide open on the doorstep to make the game 16-7 with 13:19 left.
Miller showed she was a brick wall on the free positions when she snagged a Golden Flyers shot with five minutes left to play. Off the
Miller save, the Hawks seized the moment and
Vacarelli secured her hat trick for the day when
Madigan found her slicing behind the defense.
Masterpole, like her counterpart
Vaccarelli, secured her own hat trick for the day after scoring two more goals in the last four minutes of play.
Samantha Miller led the way for the Hawks defense allowing only 17 of Nazareth's 37 shots to get past her, while saving 7 of Nazareth's 8 free position opportunities.
Kristen Vaccarelli and
Ellie Masterpole both had 3 goals and an assist on the day, while
Emily Schaub tallied 2 goals, and
Emily Madigan and
Gabrielle Stringer each had 1.
The Hawks return to action next Saturday in Rochester when they take on St. John Fisher at 1 pm.
