Women's Lacrosse Back Over .500 With Win Against Alfred

ONEONTA, NY – The Hawks were back home this afternoon to take on the Saxons of Alfred University.  With crowds of accepted students roaming Oyaron Hill, the Hawks did all they could to shine. A dominant 20-11 victory over the Saxons moved the Hawks to 5-4 on the year and 2-1 in Empire 8 play. The Saxons dropped to 2-7 on the year and remain winless in Empire 8 play at 0-3.

The day started in favor of the opponent who scored two goals in the first five minutes of the contest. It was Kristen Vaccarelli who opened the scoring for the Hawks when she found the back of the net with 9:52 left in the first. The Saxons would score one more, but Ellie Masterpole and Claudia Pollaro netted back-to-back goals and tied the game at 3 apiece. Alfred would score one to take their final lead of the day, but it was Vaccarelli from Emily Schaub on the man-up that tied the game before Masterpole gave the Hawks their first lead of the day 5-4.

The Hawks had a dominating 2nd quarter, with Emily Schaub scoring twice to kick things off; one of which she was found on the doorstep by Gabrielle Stringer. At the lucky 11:11 mark of the second quarter, Masterpole advanced the Hawks lead to 3 and then Schaub, just three minutes later, secured her hat-trick to push the game to 9-5. Katrina Marten brought the game to a 5 point differential with 5:23 to play in the half before Alfred found the net once more. Vaccarelli answered back with a goal of her own to get the lead  back to 5. Although the Saxons scored once more in the half with 21 seconds left, Hartwick took the 11-7 lead into the half.

Schaub continued her first-half performance in the second when she scored a man-up goal from a free position shot. After a wicked ride from the Hartwick offense, Vaccarelli found a cutting Masterpole who then found the back of the net for her fourth goal of the game which made the score 13-7. Alfred would rattle off two goals of their own to slow the Hawks, but Vaccarelli answered their two-goal run with two of her own, the second being from Masterpole. Emily Madigan found the net for her first goal of the game when she had a nice quick-stick shot from Kierstin Aroksaar. Alfred got the last score of the third quarter with 6 seconds and the game headed into the fourth quarter with the score at 16-10.

After a quick restart from the goal line, Schaub blew by her defender and caught the Alfred keeper out of the net for her sixth goal of the day. Alfred would score their last goal of the day with 8:42 left to play, but Hartwick wasn't ready to stop hitting the twine. Two minutes later Masterpole put a perfectly placed bounce shot through the legs of the Saxon keeper, and then found the net for her sixth goal of the day five minutes later. Samantha Miller had a crazy kick save that led to a Vaccarelli clear and goal to make the game 20-11 with 40 seconds left in the game which proved to be the final.

Ellie Masterpole and Kristen Vaccarelli led the way for the Hawks offense, each tallying 6 goals and an assist. Emily Schaub followed right behind with 5 goals and 2 assists, while Claudia Pollaro, Katrina Marten, and Emily Madigan all scored 1.  Samantha Miller stopped 5.

The Hawks return to action on April 13th when they play Morrisville State on the road starting at 4:30 pm
