Hawks’ Comeback Falls Short in Mayor’s Cup Action

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Men's soccer dropped a hard-fought battle in their Mayor's
Cup battle against St. Lawrence on Sunday afternoon, falling 3-2.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score:  St. Lawrence 3, Hartwick 2
  • Location:  Oneonta, N.Y.
  • Records:  Hartwick (1-3-1), St. Lawrence (3-0-1)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • The Hawks struck first on Sunday afternoon when Tyler Muir (Poughquag, N.Y.) slid into the box to redirect the cross from Jake Zona (Liverpool, N.Y.) for his first tally of the season in the 18th minute.
  • The lead would only last a little under ten minutes when the Saints' Marvin Sibanda scored back-to-back in the 27th and 28th minute of action.  The second tally was earned off of a penalty kick due to a Hartwick foul in the box.
  • St. Lawrence tacked on another goal in the 34th minute to take a 3-1 lead into the half.
  • Hartwick fought back throughout the entire second half, but were unable to get the connections needed to find the back of the net.
  • However, Ansh Budhwar (Delhi, India) drew a foul in the box and was able to convert his penalty kick in the 71st minute of play.
  • Down by a tally, the Hawks continued to press the Saints, creating several opportunities including multiple corner attempts down the stretch.
  • Despite outshooting the Saints 8-4 and taking an 8-2 advantage in corners, the Hawks were unable to find the equalizer and the Saints went on to claim the 3-2 victory.
  • For their efforts over the last two days in the Mayor's Cup, Rodrigo Fernandez (Leon, Mexico) and Will Napierala (Endwell, N.Y.) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
