Hartwick Opens E8 Play in Dominant Fashion behind Gagnon’s Hat-trick

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Hawks scored early and scored often on their way to a 7-2 rout of the visiting St. John Fisher Cardinals in both team's Empire 8 openers.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
 
  • Holly Calore (Rocky Point, N.Y.) jumpstarted the Hawks offense for the second game in a row, redirecting Julie Ruzzi's (High Falls, N.Y.) shot from the top of the circle into the back of the cage.
  • Sydney Gagnon (Chestertown, N.Y.) picked up her first goal of the game thanks to Leah Tolley (Pittsford, N.Y.) who corralled a rebound off of the keeper's pads and found Gagnon all alone by the left post for the goal.
  • St. John Fisher battled back, scoring with no time remaining in the first quarter.
  • Gagnon struck again with just over a minute left before half when she got out on a breakaway for her second goal of the game.
  • Gagnon picked up right where she left off, putting away her third goal of the game and the Hawks' fourth just over two minutes into the second half.  Ruzzi picked up the assist after slipping a pass to Gagnon.
  • Libby Fortin (State College, Pa.) gave Hartwick a 5-1 advantage, putting away a penalty stroke.
  • After assisting on two tallies, Ruzzi found the back of the cage herself thirty seconds before the end of the third quarter with a blast from the top of the circle.
  • Rounding out the scoring for Hartwick was Jessica Betts (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) who tapped one inside the left post off of a lift pass from Ashley Tricarico (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.).
  • St. John Fisher picked up their second goal late in the fourth quarter, but it would not matter as the Hawks finished the game with the 7-2 win.
 
UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS
 
Hartwick will take a brief break from Empire 8 play, traveling to Union for a mid-week contest at 6 PM on Wednesday, September 21.
