Volleyball Takes Two at Red Dragon Classic

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Hartwick Hawks volleyball team opened their 2022 campaign with two 4-set victories on Friday night at the SUNY Cortland Red Dragon Classic.
 
THE BASICS
 
  • Final Scores:  
    • Hartwick 3, WNE 1 (22-25, 25-15, 25-21, 25-15)
    • Hartwick 3, St. Lawrence 1 (26-24, 25-13, 18-25, 25-11)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
 
Hartwick vs WNE
 
  • WNE was able to take the first set from the Hawks as they put up 9 kills to Hartwick's 8.
  • The Hawks bounced back in the second set, forcing WNE into several attack errors.
  • In the second set, Braelyn Hornick (Candor, N.Y.) held serve for 5 straight points in the middle of the set to give Hartwick a 15-9 advantage.
  • Shaelyn Thorton (Scarborough, Me.) closed out the second set by serving 4 straight points including an ace.
  • Hartwick jumped out to early leads in both the third and fourth sets to secure the victory.
  • Staecia Silofau (Kapolei, Hawaii) led the offensive attack with 13 kills.
  • Colette Maloney (Williston Park, N.Y.) added 9 kills of her own and picked up 13 digs.
  • Hornick collected 25 assists while also posting 5 kills.
 
Hartwick vs St. Lawrence
 
  • The Saints and the Hawks went toe-to-toe in the first set, going past the 25-point mark.  Down 23-24, Silofau put away a kill to knot the set up at 24-24.  From there, the Hawks closed out the set with a block assist from Shelby Swartz (Candor, N.Y.) and Thorton, and an attack error by the Saints.
  • Hartwick picked up the second set win 25-13, but St. Lawrence battled back to take the third set 25-18 to prevent the sweep.
  • However, the Hawks reasserted themselves in the fourth set, claiming a 25-11 victory behind a balanced attack.
  • Silofau paced the offense once again with 14 kills.
  • Kaileigh Brandow (Manorville, N.Y.) and Maloney each put away 8 kills.
  • Hornick once again ran the offense, picking up 34 assists to go with 3 aces.
 
UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS
 
The Hawks return to Cortland tomorrow for the second day of the Red Dragon Classic.  Hartwick will open the day with a 2:30 PM match against Fredonia before squaring off with SUNY Cortland at 5 PM.
