Football Sees 2nd Quarter Lead Slip Away in 2nd Half, Fall to Cardinals 38-21

ONEONTA, N.Y. – After five weeks on the road, the Hawks returned to Wright Stadium to take on Empire 8 opponent, St. John Fisher, but a 35-point second half for the Cardinals put Hartwick away 38-21.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score:  Hartwick 21, St. John Fisher 38
  • Location:  Oneonta, N.Y.
  • Records:  Hartwick (1-6 Overall, 0-3 Empire 8), St. John Fisher (4-2 Overall, 1-1 Empire 8)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • The Hawks and Cardinals were quiet offensively in the first 15 minutes as neither team could sustain a drive of more than five plays.
  • In their final drive of the 1st quarter, the Hawks looked destined to make a solid march down the field converting a big 3rd and 6 with a 16-yard pass and catch from James Sobol (Old Forge, Pa.) to Nate Rath (Newport, N.Y.), getting Hartwick across midfield for the first time in the game.
  • Unfortunately, the next play put the Hawks behind the sticks as an intentional grounding penalty was called.
  • Looking to make up some ground, Hartwick passed to the right only for it to be picked off by the Cardinals.
  • The Hawks were whistled for two penalties on the play resulting in extra yardage for Fisher.
  • The visitors continued their drive into the 2nd quarter, taking it to the Hartwick 20 where St. John Fisher would look to convert a field goal.  The kick went wide left, turning the ball back over to the Hawks.
  • From their own 21, Sobol found an open Dahvion Wimberly (Schenectady, N.Y.) for a 79-yard touchdown strike.
  • Ransome Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, Pa.) converted the point after attempt to give the Hawks the 7-point lead.
  • Fisher responded on their ensuing drive, going 56 yards in seven plays ultimately resulting in a Cardinals field goal, making the score 7-3 in favor of Hartwick.
  • Once again, the Hawks swung the momentum back into their favor with a nine-play drive of their own resulting in a touchdown with a 14-yard pass from Sobol to Naquan Bradshaw (Syracuse, N.Y.).
  • Turner-Rush tacked on the PAT to give Hartwick the 14-3 lead.
  • St. John Fisher would make one more attempt at the end of the 2nd quarter, but that was denied as Nelon Priest (Schenectady, N.Y.) stepped in to pick off a Fisher pass ending the drive and the quarter.
  • After deferring to the second half, the Cardinals received the second half kickoff and made the most of their first possession going 50 yards in 10 plays for a touchdown and completed PAT to get within four of the Hawks.
  • Hartwick's offense would stall from there as the Cardinals would go on to score 28 more points in the half.
  • The Hawks made one final push on their last drive of the 4th quarter as Sobol hooked up with Wimberly for their second TD strike with this one going for 34 yards.
  • Unfortunately, that is all the Hawks would get as they fell 38-21.
