Hartwick Topples Utica In E8 Clash

Oneonta, N.Y. – The Hartwick Men's Soccer team hosted conference foe Utica on a sunny afternoon at Elmore Field.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score: Utica 1 Hartwick 3

  • Location: Oneonta, N.Y.

  • Records: Utica (3-5-2, 1-0-1 Empire 8), Hartwick (5-3-2, 2-0-1 Empire 8)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Hartwick started the game with high determination, controlling the midfield and making the right passes, hoping to create space and pressure the opposition into making a mistake.

  • Daniel Kniffen (New Paltz, N.Y.) did a great job running into space and jumpstarting runs for the Hawk offense, the team put a significant amount of pressure on the Utica defense in the opening minutes.

  • With a physical match brewing, the teams battled hard, vying for possession over one another but couldn't find shots to take.

  • The first goal of the game would go to the opposition, scoring in the 40th minute to take the lead.

  • Hartwick would not be deterred as they pushed into the opposing third several times before they were awarded with a free kick with time winding down fast. Thomas Herzog (Ridge, N.Y.) placed a wonderful ball into the box that floated over the defense, Sean Burke (West Midlands, England) was able to sneak the ball past the keeper to tie the game with seconds left on the clock.

  • Taking that momentum into the second half, the Hawks began to smother the Utica backline, constantly pushing into their territory and making them make a play.

  • Nick Nowak (Shoreham, N.Y.) used his blistering speed to get downfield and work it into the box and spotted Jim Mahony (Bournemouth, England) who headed it past the keeper in the 53rd minute.

  • Mahony had almost an instant impact in his return to the pitch, making passes and commanding his squad. Mahony netted another goal off a corner kick from Andres Ordonez Acosta (Estado de Mexico, Mexico) in the 70th minute to put the Hawks up two.

  • It was a great team showing as Hartwick battled back from the early deficit, becoming the aggressor and notching three unanswered goals on their way to victory backed by a superb second half.
