Hawks Edged Out by Skidmore’s Late 4th Quarter Goals

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Hartwick Field Hockey headed to Skidmore for a non-conference matchup on Thursday night, but were unfortunately edged out in the fourth quarter, falling 2-3.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score:  Hartwick 2, Skidmore 3
  • Location:  Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
  • Records:  Hartwick (7-2 Overall, 3-0 Empire 8), Skidmore (5-5 Overall)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Hartwick and Skidmore played to a 0-0 tie throughout the first quarter.
  • The Thoroughbreds struck first on their home turf in the 20th minute of action to take the 1-0 lead.
  • The Hawks responded in the 26th minute as Sami Shortino (Webster, N.Y.) put away a rebound off to post, tying the contest up at 1-1.
  • It would take 25 minutes of game action for the Hawks to score again.
  • The lethal penalty corner combo of Shortino and Julie Ruzzi (Rondout Valley, N.Y.) hooked up for their second goal in as many days with Ruzzi's drive from the top of the circle once again finding the back of the cage off of Shortino's insert.
  • In an attempt to tie the score, Skidmore removed their goalie from the cage in favor of an extra attacker.
  • The move paid off as the Thoroughbreds evened the score in the 59th minute of play.
  • Unfortunately for the Hawks, Skidmore would end up building on that momentum, notching the game winner off of a scrum in front of the cage with seven seconds remaining to take the 3-2 win.

UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS

With a weekend off from Empire 8 play, the Hawks will turn their attention to a mid-week match up at SUNY Cortland against the Red Dragons at 6 PM on Thursday, October 12.
