Hawks Fall 16-12 after Saxons’ Second Half Rally

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Hawks took a 9-5 lead into the second half on Saturday afternoon in the Empire 8 opener for both teams, but ultimately fell 16-12 after Alfred's second half comeback.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
 
  • Evan Johanns (Southington, Conn.) got things started for the Hawks, scoring his seventh goal of the season just 35 seconds into the contest off of a feed from Pete Conley (Foxborough, Mass.).
  • Alfred responded at the 10:20 mark in the 1st, but Hartwick went on to score three straight led by Conley with two and Liam McManus (Skillman, N.J.) with one to close out the opening quarter with a 4-1 lead.
  • The Saxons scored the opening goal of the 2nd quarter.  However, the Hawks responded once again to score three more in a row between the 10:30 mark and the 4:42 mark.
  • A flurry of goals closed out the opening half with Alfred and Hartwick each scoring two with just over a minute remaining.
  • Up 9-5 entering the second half, Conley extended Hartwick's lead with his 13th tally of the year at the 10:25 mark.  Louis Cappellino (Northport, N.Y.) picked up his first assist of the season on the play.
  • Colin August (Garrison, N.Y.) put an unassisted goal away just under two minutes later to extend the Hawks' lead to six.
  • Unfortunately, the Saxons went on to score seven unanswered between the 7:28 mark of the 3rd quarter and the 11:28 mark of the 4th to take a 12-11 lead.
  • Colby Simonetti (Pittsford, N.Y.) evened the score with 10:20 remaining in the contest with an unassisted strike.
  • The Saxons picked up where they left off just minutes before to close out the contest with four more unanswered goals to take the 16-12 win.
 
 
UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS
 
The Hawks continue their home stand on Tuesday against conference opponent, Russell Sage at 4 PM in Wright Stadium.
