Marten Breaks Single Season Assist Record but Hawks’ Comeback Falls Short in 18-12 Loss Against the Pioneers

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Hartwick Women's Lacrosse saw their comeback fall short, dropping an Empire 8 contest to the visiting Utica University Pioneers 18-12 on Wednesday afternoon.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score: Hartwick 18, Utica 12
  • Location: Oneonta, N.Y.
  • Records: Hartwick (9-2 Overall, 3-1 Empire 8), Utica (5-6 Overall, 1-2 Empire 8)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Utica scored five-straight to open the contest before the Hawks could get on the board.
  • Claudia Pollaro (Queensbury, N.Y.) got the Hawks back into the contest, picking up two within 48 seconds to cut the Pioneers' lead to just three.  Both tallies were assisted by Katrina Marten (Middlesex, N.Y.).
  • Utica swung the momentum back into their favor, registering the first two goals of the 2nd quarter.
  • Emily Madigan (Syracuse, N.Y.) tacked on the third Hawk goal at the 11:37 mark with a free position tally.
  • However, Utica went on to score eight of the next 10 goals scored in the quarter to jump out to a 15-5 lead at the half.
  • Facing the running clock to start the second half, the Hawks were able to stop the clock as Marten scored at the 10-minute mark in the 3rd to cut the Pioneers' lead to nine.
  • Utica responded with two more goals to take a 17-6 lead and regain the running clock.
  • The Hawks did not go down quietly, as Marten struck again with seven seconds remaining in the 3rd quarter to cut Utica's lead to 10.
  • Facing the running clock once again, the Hawks scored 39 seconds into the final quarter to eliminate the running clock as Pollaro found the back of the net off of a pass from Ellie Masterpole (Syracuse, N.Y.).
  • Hartwick went on to score four more, including an unassisted strike from Marten on a curl from around the net as the shot clock expired, to get within five.
  • Unfortunately, the comeback stalled from there as Utica put the ender on their 18-12 win with one final tally at the 1:25 mark.
  • Marten led the way for Hartwick in both goals and assists, scoring four and dishing out three.  Marten's three assists puts her at 49 for the season, breaking Hartwick's single-season assist record.
  • Pollaro picked up five points on three goals and two assists.
