CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Hartwick Volleyball squad opened their 2023 campaign with a four-set win over St. Lawrence University at the Cortland Red Dragon Classic on Friday night.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Hartwick jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the first set, but saw it slip away as the Saints rallied back.
- Down 11-8, the Hawks put together a run of their own, behind the strong serve of Shaelyn Thornton (Scarborough, Me.) which included three of her seven aces across the match.
- Hartwick would ultimately take the first set 25-16.
- The second set saw the Hawks dominate from start to finish, holding St. Lawrence to just 10 points in the set.
- The Saints matched the Hawks point-for-point in the third and put together a late run to take the set win and force a fourth set.
- However, Hartwick returned to form in the fourth set with another commanding win of 25-13 to take the match.
- Thornton led the way offensively for the Hawks with 12 kills, followed closely by Shelby Swartz (Candor, N.Y.) with 11.
- In her first collegiate start, Vanessa Seymour (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) tallied 31 assists and also tied for a team-high 13 digs.
- Also recording double-digits in digs were Thornton, Swartz, and Sarah Petz (Webster, N.Y.)
- The Hawks return to the court for the second day of the Cortland Red Dragon Classic at 1:30 PM tomorrow against the University of Rochester before taking on the host Red Dragons at 4 PM.
