Hawks Soar Past the Bulldogs behind Ruzzi's Hat Trick

Oneonta, N.Y. – The Hartwick Field Hockey squad hosted DeSales in a close match on a sunny Saturday morning at Wright Stadium.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score:  DeSales 2, Hartwick 5

  • Location:  Oneonta, N.Y.

  • Records:  DeSales (1-4, 0-0 MAC) Hartwick (3-1, 0-0-0 Empire 8)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Hartwick and DeSales squared off and things got underway swiftly, as DeSales made the first attacking effort but were turned away as the stout defense of the Hawks were quick to force a turnover.

  • The Hawks made stops all throughout the game as they were forced to play defense most of the half, DeSales formed a dangerous attack pushing down the field with numbers but Kiara Dolan (Cazenovia, N.Y.) halted them in the tracks, forcing a turnover and pushing the other way.

  • Julie Ruzzi (High Falls, N.Y.) broke open the scoreless tie, five minutes into the second quarter, working her way down the field and rifling one past the Bulldog keeper to get the Hawks on the board.

  • With the first half coming to an end, the Hawks held a slim 1-0 lead while outshooting their opponents 5-3, the squad played a good first half limiting their opponents shots while stopping drives early in the possesion.

  • Sami Shortino (Webster, N.Y.) started the second half off the right way for the Hawks as she found a lurking Ruzzi ready to swoop in as Ruzzi notched her second goal of the game.

  • The opposition would begin to show life as they answered back with a goal of their own shortly after, just three minutes later the red hot Ruzzi sniped another goal to complete the hat trick and extend the lead back to two.

  • More back and forth play ensued as the Bulldogs knocked in their second goal of the quarter but that goal was matched by Caroline Aspuru (Farmingville, N.Y.) who found the back of the net after being assisted by Julie Ruzzi early in the fourth quarter.

  • Danielle Hand (Queensbury, N.Y.) would round out the scoring for the Hawks, notching a goal in the 4th quarter to give Hartwick some breathing room en route to their 5-2 victory.
