Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Hartwick Prevails Past Union

Oneonta, N.Y. – The Hartwick Field Hockey squared up against Union College for a midday showdown at Wright Stadium and Hartwick was sure not to disappoint.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score:  Union 3 , Hartwick 4

  • Location:  Oneonta, N.Y.

  • Records:  Union (3-3, 0-0 Liberty League) Hartwick (4-1, 0-0 Empire 8)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • With the first quarter underway, Hartwick got the ball to the opposing half rather quickly, earning themselves a corner within the first minutes of the game.

  • Carrying their momentum from the early corner, the Hawks notched their first goal of the game after Libby Fortin (State College, Pa.) spotted Sami Shortino (Webster, N.Y.) near post and Shortino would cash in on their opportunity.

  • Hartwick spent the first half of the second quarter pressuring the Union back line, constantly forcing them to use all their resources in order to clear the ball. A slick takeaway from the Hawk defense jump started a breakaway, Ashley Tricarico (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) delivered a splendid pass down the middle where Danielle Hand (Queensbury, N.Y.) was able to slap it past the keeper for a two goal lead.

  • Union answered back with two consecutive goals to tie the game at two going into the half. It was a positive half for the Hawks as they generated eight shots compared to Union's five, Makenzie Kensel (San Diego, Calif.) was active in the passing lanes taking away options for the opposing attack.

  • The second half began and the Hawks looked to strike first and retake the lead, after an unsuccessful corner from the opposition, the squad began to push the ball up field where Dani Hand returned the favor to Ashley Tricarico delivering a clean assist that Tricarico ripped past the goalie to go up one.

  • Holding the slim one goal lead and the third quarter ticking away, Hartwick would unfortunately let up a Union goal to tie the game but it didnt last for long as Julie Ruzzi worked around the defense to set up a Dani Hand goal that was sniped from 10-15 meters out for the game deciding goal with 30 seconds left in the third.

  • The stout Hawk defense led by Emily Strutt (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) boasted their defensive prowess all fourth quarter, causing a power outage in the Garnet Charger offense holding them to just one shot as the Hawks were victorious in a hard fought clash.

UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS

The Hawks will return to Wright Stadium to face off against Empire 8 opponent Elmira on Saturday, September 23rd at 1:00 PM.
