WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
-
The Hartwick Women's soccer squad faced off against the Wildcats of SUNY Poly on a chilly afternoon under the lights, the Hawks looked to bounce back from their previous skid and started the game with poise and high intensity.
-
From the starting whistle, the Hawks made it clear that they were going to be enforcing the tempo of the game as they posted a shot on goal within the first minute of play.
-
Shortly after that, the team would push down the field once more with Madi McGuire (Goshen, N.Y.) leading the charge and sent a well-placed pass to the feet of the incoming Myah Johnston (Roxbury, N.Y.) who put it past the goalkeeper for the first goal of the game in the 2nd minute.
-
One goal did not satisfy the hunger of the Hawks as they posted several more shots before Grace Byrne (Lynbrook, N.Y.) found the back of the net in the 19th minute after receiving a cross from Nelle Slavitsky (Conklin, N.Y.).
-
The Hawks posted 12 shots in the first half as they held a comfortable 2-0 lead after controlling the ball for most of the half, only allowing the Wildcats to muster one shot.
-
With the second half underway, it was more of the same as the Hawks flocked to every loose ball and were active in the passing lanes forcing the opponent to play in their last third for majority of the half, capitalizing on the tired Poly backline, Jenna Mierek (Prospect, Conn.) worked her way around a defender to slot a goal from range past the outstretched keeper to extend the Hawk lead to three after Abigail McCleary (Monroe, N.Y.) spotted her through trafffic .
-
Mierek followed up her first goal with a wonderfully struck ball from 20-25 yards out and floated the ball right over the keepers head to give Hartwick a four goal lead just 9 minutes after.
-
Madi McGuire scored the fifth and final goal for the Hawks, rifling a shot past the keeper from just outside the box to round out an incredible day for the Hawks.
-
Hartwick possessed the ball for majority of the game, displaying a form of relentlessness and poise that we know the team is very capable of, it was an excellent team showing and the Hawks look to carry this play into the weekend for conference play.
