ONEONTA, N.Y. – Volleyball completed a nearly insurmountable comeback on Friday night, rallying from seven points down in the 5
th set to defeat Oneonta State 3-2.
THE BASICS
- Final Score: Hartwick 3, Oneonta St. 2 (25-27, 25-19, 25-23, 18-25, 15-12)

- Records: Hartwick (4-5 Overall), Oneonta St. (2-9 Overall)
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Hartwick started slow in the 1st set, falling behind 7-2 early in the match.
- However, a strong service run by Shelby Swartz (Candor, N.Y.) allowed the Hawks to knot the score up at 8-8 before the Red Dragons went on another run to create a six-point cushion.
- The Hawks slowly clawed their way back into the set, pushing points to eventually take a 21-20 lead.
- Unfortunately, the back-and-forth battle ended in favor of Oneonta State, putting the Hawks down 1 set to 0.
- The second set started much like the first with Hartwick having to rally back multiple times.
- The set would see the score change hands four times before Hartwick eventually came out on top 25-19.
- The Hawks outlasted the Red Dragons in the third set, picking up the 25-23 win.
- Oneonta battled back in the fourth set, capitalizing on seven Hartwick attack errors to knot the match up at two sets each.
- The fifth and deciding set looked to be headed the way of the Red Dragons with the Hawks falling behind 11-4.
- Hartwick was able to cut into Oneonta's lead as the defense forced the Red Dragons into three errors to get within striking distance.
- The Hawks would concede one more point to the Red Dragons stalling the visitors at 12 points.
- Down 12-8, the Hawks pushed points behind the serve of senior Kaileigh Brandow (Manorville, N.Y.) and the offensive attack of outside hitter, Shaelyn Thornton (Scarborough, Me.) and middle hitter, Aaliyah Williams (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) to complete the comeback.
- Thornton and Staecia Silofau (Kapolei, Hawaii) led Hartwick offensively with 11 kills each, while Swartz added 10.
- However, it was the defense and strong serve that ultimately proved to be the difference makers in the comeback with Hartwick collecting 14 total blocks, 73 digs and 17 aces.
- Silofau and Williams each picked up five assisted blocks, while Thornton collected five aces.
- Brandow and Vanessa Seymour (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) notched four aces each. Seymour also collected 35 assists.
- Four Hawks saw their dig totals reach double digits, led by Swartz with 13, Silofau and Sarah Petz (Webster, N.Y.) contributed 12, while Seymour ended her night with 10.

The Hawks will play one more non-conference match on Tuesday, hitting the road to take on SUNY Morrisville at 6 PM before conference play begins.
