WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • The Hawks jumped out to a quick lead on Tuesday evening, taking a 12-5 advantage midway through the first set.
  • However, a late set push by the Mustangs eventually knotted the score up at 21-21.
  • From there, the two teams would battle back and forth, going well past the 25-point mark with Morrisville eventually pulling out the 29-27 first set win.
  • The second set proved to be a set of short runs as neither team was able to gain more than a three-point lead.
  • Hartwick was able to come out on top in the second, capped off by a Staecia Silofau (Kapolei, Hawaii) kill to give the visitors the 25-22 win.
  • The Mustangs asserted themselves early in the third set, pushing points midway through the set for an eventual 9-point lead.
  • The Hawks battled back once again to get within four points, but it wasn't enough as the Mustangs took the third set 25-20.
  • The fourth set was scripted much like the second set with the Hawks eventually pulling away late for the 25-21 win to tie the match up at two sets each.
  • Playing their second five-set match in as many matches, the Hawks were able to pull away early behind a four-point run behind the serve of Sarah Petz (Webster, N.Y.).
  • Morrisville returned the favor, going on a five-point run of their own to get within striking distance.
  • The Mustangs put together one final run to tie the score, 14-14.
  • The match would ultimately end up how it started in the first set as both teams looked to find a way to take the 2-point lead in order to end the match.
  • Morrisville would eventually find that lead, taking the fifth set 20-18.
  • Across the five sets, there were 31 tie scores and 18 lead changes between the two squads.
  • Silofau and Shaelyn Thornton (Scarborough, Me.) paced the Hartwick offense, putting away 12 kills each.
  • Niah Reeves (Binghamton, N.Y.) and Shelby Swartz (Candor, N.Y.) followed close behind as both posted 11 kills.
  • Five Hawks posted double-digits in digs, with Petz leading the way with 18.  The senior also led the team in aces with three.
  • Silofau, Swartz, and Thornton completed the double-double of kills and digs with 14, 12, and 10 respectively.
  • Vanessa Seymour (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) chipped in 11 digs to go along with 42 assists.
