WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Hartwick used an early service run by first-year setter, Vanessa Seymour (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) to set the tone in the first set as the Hawks jumped out to an early 6-1 lead.
- Utica tried to make a mid-set push, but the Hawks were able to keep the Pioneers at a distance as they progressed through the remainder of the set to take the 25-18 win.
- The Hawks once again jumped out to an early lead in the second set, this time behind the serve of senior libero, Sarah Petz (Webster, N.Y.) who helped force the Pioneers into three attack errors in the run.
- Utica continued to try to work their way back into the set, but the Hawks continued to keep one step ahead until late in the set when Petz once again received the serve, putting away back-to-back aces to give Hartwick a cushion as they went on to win 25-16.
- For the third straight match, the Hawks faltered in the third set, falling 22-25 after being forced to play from behind for the majority of the set.
- However, Hartwick rallied back in the fourth set, behind strong performances from Niah Reeves (Binghamton, N.Y.) and Staecia Silofau (Kapolei, Hawaii).
- Hartwick continued to rely on a balanced attack from Silofau, Reeves, Shaelyn Thornton (Scarborough, Me.) and Shelby Swartz (Candor, N.Y.) as all four recorded double digits in kills.
- The Hawks also transitioned from defense to offense well, combining for 71 digs compared to just 54 for Utica.
- Petz and Thornton led the way with 17 digs each, while Silofau and Seymour also finished in double-digits with 15 and 11 respectively.
- Seymour posted 51 assists across the four sets.
