ALFRED, N.Y. – The Hawks dropped their first Empire 8 contest on Friday night 3-0 despite matching the Saxons point-for-point in the first two sets.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- The Hawks and the Saxons played a tight first set with the Hawks playing from behind early.
- However, Hartwick rebounded several times throughout the set, finding ways to tie the score just as Alfred looked to pull away.
- Knotted at 23-23, the Saxons took a timeout and immediately put up the two points needed to take the 25-23 win.
- Despite an early lead by the Hawks in the second set, the Saxons rallied back in the middle of the set, creating another back-and-forth end to the set.
- Alfred would end up taking the 25-23 win with another late set push.
- Down two sets to none, the Hawks once again took an early lead in the third set.
- After tying the score up at 5-5, Alfred went on to score eight straight before Hartwick could get back on the board again.
- The Hawks picked up a handful of side-outs, but were unable to push points on the serve, allowing the Saxons to continue to expand their lead, eventually taking the final set 25-14.
- Hartwick received a double-digit kill performance from Staecia Silofau (Kapolei, Hawaii) with 13. The junior also picked up three aces.
- Defensively, Shaelyn Thornton (Scarborough, Me.) led the Hawks with 13 digs.

Hartwick shifts their focus to another key Empire 8 contest tomorrow at 11 AM. After the conference contest, the Hawks will square off with non-conference opponent, Vassar in the finale of the tri-match.
