Hawks Back in Win Column with 3-0 E8 Win at Elmira

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Hawks rebounded from last night's conference loss at Alfred to sweep the Elmira College Soaring Eagles on Saturday morning for a critical E8 win.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score:  Hartwick 3, Elmira 0 (25-17. 25-17, 25-18)
  • Location:  Elmira, N.Y.
  • Records:  Hartwick (7-7 Overall, 3-1 Empire 8), Elmira (6-12 Overall, 0-4 Empire 8)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • The Hawks trailed early in the first set before Shelby Swartz (Candor, N.Y.) received the ball and went on a service run that took Hartwick from the two-point deficit to a six-point advantage.
  • The Soaring Eagles chipped away to get within three, but the Hawks pushed enough points behind the serve of Sarah Petz (Webster, N.Y.) to give them a lead that they would ride out for the remainder of the set to take the 25-17 win.
  • Down 5-4 in the second set, Swartz and Vanessa Seymour (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) paired together for an assisted block to put the ball into the hands of Kaileigh Brandow (Manorville, N.Y.) for the serve.
  • The senior picked up an ace in the run of serves that helped the Hawks take a commanding 13-5 lead.
  • Both squads would trade off pushing handfuls behind their serve, but Hartwick once again had put enough distance between themselves and Elmira to take the second set 25-17.
  • Despite not having a lengthy service run in the third set, the Hawks would do enough with each held serve to create enough distance to capture the final set 25-18, sweeping the key Empire 8 match 3-0.
  • Six Hawks recorded kills in the match, with Brandow leading the way with nine.
  • The outside hitter was also a force defensively, posting a team-high 13 digs.
  • Joining Brandow with double-digit digs were Petz and Seymour who finished with 10 each.
