Hawks Hold Pioneers to Home Draw

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Hartwick Women's Soccer Team hosted the Utica University Pioneers for a chilly Empire 8 conference showdown under the lights of Elmore Field.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score: Utica 1 Hartwick 1

  • Location: Oneonta, N.Y.

  • Records: Utica (4-8-2, 2-4-2 Empire 8) Hartwick (4-4-5, 1-3-4 Empire 8)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • The Hawks and the Pioneers prepared for a chilly showdown under the lights with temperatures dropping to 40 degrees as the starting whistle blew.

  • Hartwick would try to generate some early pressure from kickoff, pushing down the field but their attack would be stopped short due to an offsides call.

  • Utica registered their first corner of the game in the 17th minute, shortly after a Hartwick corner. Building off the corner, the Pioneers created a dangerous chance to get on the scoreboard with a shot coming from just outside the box. Morgan Perry (Otego, N.Y.) was able to jump up and deflect the ball but was unable to secure it as the ball sprung off the crossbar, leading to another Utica shot that missed just wide as the Hawks escaped danger.

  • The Royal Blue and White worked on unraveling the Pioneer defense, accumulating four first half shots but none were able to find the back of the net.

  • A majority of the first half was spent in the midfield with both teams displaying solid ball movement, trying to formulate attacks but would be stopped by the stout back lines as they attempted to get into the attacking third.

  • Grace Byrne (Lynbrook, N.Y.) posted the final shot of the half with a strike from outside the box, but missed just high to close out the first half.

  • The first half ended in a scoreless stalemate with teams posting two corners a piece and the Pioneers leading the shot battle 5-4.

  • With the second half underway, an early Hartwick foul put them in danger as Utica posted three shots in the following two minutes but Perry and the Hawks banded together and were able to flip momentum.

  • The Hawks posted their first look at goal in the 61st minute but were unable to convert.

  • Perry picked up her sixth save in the 76th minute, the team was quick to get the ball out and formulated a counter attack. Millie Caldon (Gilmanton, N.H.) posted a wonderful strike from a few yards outside the box, sailing over the Utica keeper but unfortunately finding the crossbar. The Hawks were able to post a shot off the rebound but missed high.

  • Hartwick kept up the momentum, working down the right side of the pitch as Byrne infiltrated the Pioneers' final third, Byrne connected with Ella Weber (Lenhartsville, Pa.) with a lead pass into the box. Weber dished it off to a lurking Julia Bono (West Milford, N.J.) who fired a missile into the right side of the goal that hit the keeper's outstretched glove but had too much on it to be stopped for the first score in the 79th minute.

  • Utica equalized with a cross into the box that found a Pioneer attacker for a score in the 82nd minute.

  • Possession was hard to keep in the final minutes as both teams tried to put one more goal up on the scoreboard but were unable to, ending in a hard fought draw.

COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH BRIAN KNAPP

"This one stings, we've played pretty well throughout. Seeing us incorporate things that we've worked on at training along with areas we need to improve on from previous matches has been encouraging. But it's frustrating to see our hard work to get on the scoreboard not pay off, conceding just over three minutes later. We've got plenty to build on as we head to St. John Fisher on Saturday and know we'll go out and leave it all on the field again."

UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS

The Hawks will hit the road to St. John Fisher for an Empire 8 matchup against the Cardinals on Saturday, October 19th at 7PM.
