Hartwick Swim and Dive Makes Strong Start at Blue Devil Invite

FREDONIA, N.Y. - The Hartwick Swim and Dive program headed to Fredonia State for the Blue Devil Invite, competing amongst six teams.

 

MEN'S RECAP

  • The preliminary round began at 10 AM as swimmers looked to start the morning with solid performances to qualify for finals in the evening.

  • Bryce Rogers (Fulton, N.Y.) put on a strong showing in the 500 yard freestyle, finishing second with a finishing mark of four minutes and 57 seconds in the first event of the morning.

  • Touching the wall right after Rogers was Cameron Drake (El Cajon, Cal.), finishing three seconds behind Rogers to qualify for finals as well.

  • Hassan Abdelwahed (New Hartford, N.Y.) battled his way through a tightly contested 200 IM, ultimately finishing second with a time of one minute and 59 seconds, one second behind a Penn State-Behrend swimmer.

  • Sebastian Knowles (Plano, TX.) clocked in at 22.64 seconds in the 50 yard freestyle, trailing just one tenth of a second of the sixth place finisher.

  • The 200 yard freestyle marked the start of the evening, Knowles, Abdelwahed, Sebastian Gomez (Mineola, N.Y.), and Evan Nezat (Jacksonville, N.C.) were just edged out by Brockport and Alfred State. The Hawks clocked in at 1:29.93 for fourth place, Alfred State placed third at 1:29.77 and Brockport took second with a time of 1:29.07.

  • Drake was first to touch the wall in the 500 yard freestyle final, posting a finishing mark of four minutes and 45 seconds.

  • Abdelwahed placed second in the 200 IM final, clocking in at two minutes to keep momentum going.

  • The Men capped off their first day with a third place finish in the 400 yard medley relay as Gomez, Nezat, Abdelwahed, and Rogers combined for a three minute and 36 second finish.

  • Hartwick sits in third place with a score of 419.5.

WOMEN'S RECAP

  • Cate Russo (San Pedro, Cal.) got the morning started for the women with a second place finish in the 500 yard freestyle with a finishing mark of five minutes and twenty seven seconds.

  • Katherine Viera (South Windsor, Conn.) took fourth place in the 500 yard freestyle, timing in at five minutes and thirty seven seconds, earning a spot in the finals.

  • The 200 IM followed and Min-Syun Chen (Saratoga Springs, N.Y,.) was first to touch the wall for the Hawks and third overall. Chen clocked in one second behind second place at two minutes and twenty seconds. Danielle DeCarlo (Whitesboro, N.Y.) turned in a solid performance in the 200 IM as well, finishing one second behind Chen for fifth place.

  • Courtney Pierce (Fulton, N.Y.) wrapped up prelims for the women with a sixth place finish, clocking in at 25.56 seconds, earning a spot in the finals.

  • Anna Bischoff (Oneonta, N.Y.),  Aubrey Vaile (Wesley Chapel, Fla.), Jillian Ferrie (Middle Grove, N.Y.), and Russo placed fourth in the 200 yard freestyle relay to start the evening.

  • Russo placed second in the 500 yard freestyle final, posting a five minute and 19 second finish, trailing just one second behind first place.

  • Ferrie, DeCarlo, and Chen finished consecutively in the 200 IM with Ferrie taking second place at 2:18.68, DeCarlo placed third at 2:21.30, and Chen took fourth at 2:21.51.

  • Chen, Pierce, Vaile, and Bree Dy (Matawan, N.J.) completed the final event of the night for the Hawks with a fourth place finish in the 400 yard medley relay, clocking in at four minutes and ten seconds.

  • The Hawks sit at third with a score of 482.5 after one day of competition.

UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS

The Hawks will enter Day Two of the Blue Devil Invite, with the second preliminary round set to begin at 10 AM.
