-
The Hawks opened with early pressure, Andres Ordonez Acosta (Estado de Mexico, Mexico) fired the first shot of the evening from outside the box, but the Elmira keeper notched his first save of the day.
-
Ordonez Acosta and Jake Daly (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) each posted a shot on goal over the next two minutes, but were saved as well.
-
Elmira answered back with an attack of their own, working their way down the pitch and putting Dante Gesamondo (Lynnfield, Mass.) to the test with a dangerous chance. It was a footrace between Gesamondo and the Elmira attacker as a loose ball approached the box, Dante was able to slide in and thwart the first shot attempt just in time, sending the ball straight into the air.
-
The airborne ball took a bounce in the box before it was fired up and over the goal by an Elmira attacker as the Hawks escaped the danger.
-
The Soaring Eagles would not be denied on their next attack as the Hawks conceded their first goal of the game at the 15 minute mark after an Elmira attacker pushed his way down the left wing and into the box for the score.
-
Hartwick looked to flip the momentum, being awarded their first corner kick in the 28th minute.
-
Even though there was no direct result from the corner, it kept Elmira trapped in their final third as they attempted to clear the ball amidst the swarming Hawks.
-
After a few passes around, the Hawks were able to regain possession in Elmira's half and looked to equalize. Jace Riegel (Owego, N.Y.) sent in a powerful strike from outside the box, soaring above the outstretched keeper but unfortunately finding the crossbar and bouncing out.
-
Elmira was eager to extend their lead before the half, attempting to make runs into Hartwick territory but were tagged with two offsides calls in three minutes.
-
The Hawks posted a corner and shot in the final three minutes of the half but were unsuccessful as they headed into the half, trailing by one.
-
Tensions began to rise as fouls began to pile up as the two teams only had 45 minutes left to keep their championship aspirations alive.
-
Ordonez Acosta posted the first shot on goal of the half with a brilliant strike from the left wing, but an acrobatic save from Elmira turned the Hawks away in the 56th minute.
-
The Hawks earned two corners after the Ordonez Acosta attempt but could not formulate a shot on goal as the clock continued to tick away.
-
Elmira extended their lead to two as the Hawks were tabbed with a foul in the box on a 50/50 ball, awarding them a penalty kick in the 69th minute.
-
Hartwick upped their efforts and intensity to the max as they needed to find a way to score two goals in the final twenty minutes, the comeback attempt would begin with a corner in the 72nd minute.
-
Daly sent the ball into the box off the awarded corner, connecting with Riegel as he headed the ball towards the goal but the Elmira keeper was positioned well in order to stop the Riegel attempt.
-
The Soaring Eagles counter attacked and posted a corner, but the Hawks were able to stop the attack and attempt to get back into Elmira territory.
-
The Hawks posted corners in the 81st and 85th minutes but were unable to generate shots on goal as time continued to whittle away.
-
Hartwick's final shot attempt came off their final corner in the 87th minute, but missed just wide as the Hawks' 2024 campaign would come to a close in the semi final round of the 2024 Empire 8 Men's Soccer Championship Tournament.
COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH JOHN SCOTT
"The season has ended, but the team has represented us very well. There is a natural disappointment about the result, as there should be, but with a strong returning squad, we look forward to keeping our progress moving forward."
