Hartwick Women Outlasted Down the Stretch in Season Opener

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Hawks battled back and forth with SUNY Cobleskill throughout much of the contest on Friday night, but it was ultimately the Fighting Tigers who would pull away late for the 71-58 win over Hartwick.

THE BASICS

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Coach Lombard's 2024-2025 squad jumped out to an early lead in their season opener with Macy Durkin (Syracuse, N.Y.) picking up layups on Hartwick's first two possessions.
  • Cobleskill quickly turned the tide in their favor mid-way through the 1st quarter, jumping out to a 16-10 lead with 4:26 left to play in the quarter.
  • The Hawks battled back behind the veteran presence of Daniella DeBiase (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Durkin who collectively poured in six points and tacked on an assist to give Hartwick the 21-20 lead at the end of the 1st.
  • The 2nd quarter turned into a back-and-forth battle with 13 lead changes across the 10 minutes of play.
  • Unfortunately, it was the Fighting Tigers who would take the 38-33 lead into halftime.
  • Both teams started cold in the second half with the first bucket not coming until 7:26 mark in the 3rd quarter off of a driving layup from Yadi Smith (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) to put the Hawks within three.
  • However, Cobleskill slowly put distance between themselves and Hartwick across the remainder of the 3rd quarter and into the 4th, ultimately gaining a 13-point lead with 8:50 remaining in the contest.
  • Hartwick rode the hot hand of transfer, Emma Cohen (Utica, N.Y.) to get within five points with six minutes remaining.
  • The Hawks were unable to continue the run as the Fighting Tigers eventually pulled away for the 71-58 win.
  • Durkin started her sophomore campaign, leading the Hawks in scoring with 16 points.
  • Cohen ended her first game as a Hawk with 14 points and DeBiase ended her night with 12 points.
  • Despite the loss, Head Coach Sarah Lombard praised her team post game saying, "I couldn't be happier with the effort, intensity, and overall play from start to finish."
