Hawks Win “Battle of the Hills” at SUNY Oneonta, 3-1

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Women's Volleyball wrapped up their regular season with a "Battle of the Hills" victory over the Red Dragons on Saturday afternoon.
 
THE BASICS
 
  • Final Score:  Hartwick 3, SUNY Oneonta 1 (22-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-17)
  • Location:  Oneonta, N.Y.
  • Record:  Hartwick (20-2 Overall, 9-2 Empire 8), Oneonta (9-18 Overall, 2-7 SUNYAC)
 
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
 
  • SUNY Oneonta jumped on the Hawks early in the first set, picking up a 5-1 lead.
  • Hartwick would eventually climb back into the set creating a back-and-forth battle that came down to the very end of the set with the Red Dragons coming back from a 20-22 deficit to win the set 25-22.
  • The toe-to-toe action continued into the 2nd set until a kill by Shelby Swartz (Candor, N.Y.) broke a 9-9 deadlock for the side out.
  • From there, the Hawks would pull away more and more with each serve, eventually taking the win 25-21.
  • Swartz would make a similar momentum changing play in the third, putting away a kill while the Hawks were up by the slim margin of 7-6 for another side out.
  • Hartwick would go on an eight-point scoring run from there behind the serve of Shaelyn Thornton (Scarborough, Me.).
  • The Hawks' offense stalled at their 21st point while Oneonta climbed back into the contest 21-16.
  • However, the Hawks would hold on, picking up the 25-18 third-set win.
  • Hartwick went on to win the fourth set 25-17, holding a steady lead throughout the set.
  • Isabella Gracias (Oneonta, N.Y.) was a force for the Hawks across the four sets, picking up a career-high 18 kills.
  • In addition to serving the Hawks to big runs, Thornton ended her afternoon with 13 kills and two aces.
  • Braelyn Hornick (Candor, N.Y.) assisted on 46 of Hartwick's 58 kills.
  • Defensively, the Hawks flew all over the floor as four players picked up double digits in digs, including three over the 20-dig mark.
  • Swartz led the team with 21, closely followed by Hornick and Thornton with 20, and Staecia Silofau (Kapolei, Hawaii) with 19.
  • With this afternoon's win, the Hawks have now captured just their third 20-win season in program history.
  • This is the second 20-win season for the juniors and seniors who were a part of the 2022 squad who was the first team to pick up 20 wins since 1997.
 
UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS
 
The Hawks will now turn all of their attention to the Empire 8 Tournament.  Hartwick will host a first round contest on Tuesday, November 12 at 7 PM against SUNY Brockport.
