ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Hartwick Women's Lacrosse team hosted New Paltz for their season opener in a tightly contested non-conference contest.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score: New Paltz 9 Hartwick 7

  • Location: Oneonta, N.Y.

  • Records: New Paltz (2-0, 0-0 SUNYAC) Hartwick (0-1, 0-0 Empire 8)

 WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • The Hawks matched up with New Paltz and got off to a quick start as Emily Madigan (Syracuse, N.Y.) was able to spot Kristen Vaccarelli (Dix Hills, N.Y.) cutting through the defense. Vaccarelli would capitalize off the feed from Madigan and slot one past the keeper just 30 seconds into the match.

  • Vaccarelli found the back of the net again after being assisted by Katrina Marten (Middlesex, N.Y.) to go up two with 11 minutes left.

  • Hartwick conceded a goal to New Paltz before Marten and Vacarelli scored once more to conclude their highest scoring quarter with four goals.

  • New Paltz controlled the second quarter, scoring three goals to take a 5-4 lead at the end of the first half.

  • The second half got underway and the Hawks were determined to get their potent offense in rhythm as they began to push the ball downfield.

  • Vaccarelli knotted the score up at five with a man down goal, notching her fourth goal of the game. It would be the lone goal of the quarter for the Hawks as New Paltz added on two more goals.

  • Headed into the fourth quarter down two, the Hawks earned a free position attempt and Vaccarelli netted her fifth goal, playing a man up.

  • The opposition scored two goals to go up three, Hartwick continued to battle for the remainder of the fourth, Hanna Goodreau (North Reading, Mass.) scored with a little over a minute left to pull within two but unfortunately ran out of time.

  • Brooke Lynett (Acton, Mass.) racked up 13 saves in her collegiate debut.
