Hawks Fall to Pioneers in Conference Clash

UTICA, N.Y. – The Hartwick Women's Lacrosse Team continued their road Empire 8 Conference slate with a matchup against the Pioneers on a rainy afternoon.

 

THE BASICS

  • Final Score: Hartwick 13 Utica 15

  • Location: Utica, N.Y.

  • Records: Hartwick (6-6, 2-2 Empire 8), Utica (11-3, 3-1 Empire 8)

 

 WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • The Hawks trailed early as Utica struck first with a goal on the opening possession. 

  • Utica tacked on another goal at the 13:49 mark to extend their lead.

  • A successful clear by Emily Madigan (Syracuse, N.Y.) allowed Katrina Marten (Middlesex, N.Y.) to spot and pick out a cutting Kristen Vaccarelli (Dix Hills, N.Y.) who shook her defender and sent a missile past the keeper for their first goal.

  • On the following drive, Marten drew several defenders towards her, freeing up Kara Anderson (Collingwood, Ont.) who capitalized on the pass from Marten and tied the game with 12:13 left on the clock.

  • Hartwick began to gain momentum as a Utica green card put the team in prime position to score once again. Madigan sliced through the Pioneer defense to score her first goal of the game.

  • Marten continued to facilitate the offense, picking up her third assist on Madigan's second goal.

  • The ensuing draw control was won by Brianna Liebro (Castleton, N.Y.) which set up a goal by Hanna Goodreau (North Reading, Mass.) later in the possession as the Hawks scored five unanswered goals before a Utica timeout at the 8:53 mark. 

  • Hartwick stayed red hot after the timeout as Vaccarelli knocked down her second goal of the quarter, halfway through the first.

  • Marten scored the final goal of the first quarter with four minutes remaining, heading into the second leading 7-2.

  • Madigan completed her hat trick with a goal in the opening minute of the second quarter with Pollaro picking up the assist as the team scored eight straight goals.

  • Utica went on a scoring run of their own, stringing together four goals.

  • The first half ended with the Hawks up 8-6, Madigan led scoring with three goals and Marten led with three assists at half.

  • After a quiet second quarter, the Hawks opened up the half with Anderson capitalizing on the man-up opportunity, scoring her second goal on the assist from Pollaro.

  • The Pioneers responded with two goals to pull within one with nine minutes left in the quarter.

  • The game was knotted at nine after a Utica goal at the 7:11 mark.

  • Vaccarelli continued her free position dominance, answering back by finding the back of the net on the free position shot to regain the lead.

  • Anderson completed her hat trick, scoring on the following possession with under five minutes left.

  • Marten threaded a pass through traffic to Pollaro who was able to put it away with authority, giving the squad some breathing room with 2:45 left on the clock.

  • Utica began the fourth quarter with a goal coming at the 13:30 mark. The opposition pulled within one after scoring with twelve minutes left.

  • Vaccarelli scored her fourth goal of the game to go up 13-11, a Hawk foul led to a free position goal by Utica as the Hawks led by one with seven minutes to go.

  • Another free position goal by Utica tied the game up once again with five minutes remaining.They would take the lead with 3:51 left on the clock.

  • The Hawks conceded a goal with 31 seconds left to put the game out of reach as they were defeated by the Pioneers.

 

UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS

Hartwick will return home to square off against Empire 8 opponent, Alfred University on Saturday, April 20th at 12 PM. The Hawks will honor their three seniors before the start of Saturday's game.
