WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
-
The Hartwick Hawks faced off against the Red Dragons for their annual matchup on a cloudy afternoon as they kicked off the game.
-
Both teams would trade possessions in the opening minutes, being able to get past midfield before being swarmed by their respective defenses.
-
Oneonta would make the first push into the opposing half, generating the first shot of the game that missed wide right.
-
Millie Caldon (Gilmanton, N.H.) was all over the field in her Hawk debut, constantly taking space and pressuring the Red Dragon backline.
-
After the Hawks were able to push the ball downfield, they got the first chance at a goal with a shot that missed high ten minutes in.
-
The Red Dragons formulated a counter-attack with a pass over the top of the Hawk defense which created a promising one on one with the keeper but Meghan Perry (Otego, N.Y.) positioned herself perfectly and made a wonderful sliding save to turn Oneonta away.
-
Oneonta was able to break away again and put the Hawks in a tough spot, a Red Dragon shot was saved by Perry, with the ball still loose, Oneonta would strike the crossbar but found the back of the net on the third attempt to take a one goal lead.
-
The Hawks began to generate more and more forward progress but struggled to connect the final pass to create shots on goal.
-
With the first half coming to a close, Hartwick made sure not to let up one bit, making the opposition work extremely hard to create pressure.
-
As the second half began, Oneonta formulated an early shot that Perry was able to snag out the air for a save.
-
Hartwick would start to get the offense moving, answering back with several shots of their own, even getting inches within tying the game but could not capitalize.
-
Oneonta pushed deep into Hawk territory looking to score, sending a cross into the box that was stonewalled by Trinity Irizarry (Greenwood Lake, N.Y.) to keep the game within reach.
-
Time continued to dwindle as the Royal Blue and White did everything in their power to keep the Red Dragons at one goal, another push by Oneonta seemed dangerous until a perfectly executed tackle in the box by Jenna Mierek (Prospect, Conn.) halted the attack.
-
Caldon continued to fly around the field, almost tying the game with six minutes left, only to be turned away by a fingertip save from the Oneonta keeper.
-
The near miss from Caldon had the Red Dragons stumbling, as Hartwick began to click and turn up the attack.
-
After earning another corner, Mierek was able to get the ball through a crowded box to a lurking Stella Rowley (Little Falls, N.Y) who found the back of the net with five minutes left on the clock to knot the game up at one.
-
The teams each generated one more attack but nothing came of it as the Hawks earned a hard fought draw in a Battle of the Hills to kick off their season.
COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH BRIAN KNAPP
"I'm extremely proud of the heart that this group showed today. We rallied after conceding a goal and cleaned up some of our mistakes from the first half. This never-say-die mentality we are building with this group was on full display tonight. We'll have plenty to work on as we continue to prepare for our upcoming games and I'm eager to see us continuing to try to be the best version of ourselves."
