MARCY, N.Y. – The Hartwick Women's Soccer Team squared off against the SUNY Poly Wildcats, picking up their first conference win of the season.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score: Hartwick 5 SUNY Poly 2

  • Location: Marcy, N.Y.

  • Records: Hartwick (4-2-2, 1-1-1 Empire 8), SUNY Poly (3-3, 0-2 Empire 8)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Hartwick matched up with new Empire 8 conference member SUNY Poly, looking to pick up their first conference win of the season.

  • The Hawks came flying out the gates, earning a corner kick after just one minute of play.

  • After picking up two assists off corner kicks vs Nazareth, Jenna Mierek (Prospect, Conn.) displayed her ability to place the ball into the box with precision once again, finding Nicasia Santos (Flemington, N.J.) amidst a stacked box.

  • Santos was able to rise above the crowd and head the ball into the right side of the net for the first goal of the game, two minutes in.

  • The Hawks continued to be effective off corner kicks as Morgan Perry (Otego, N.Y.)  was able to score off the attempt, sneaking one into the left corner of the goal past the outstretched keeper, coming off a direct feed from Mierek.

  • A Hartwick foul would award the Wildcats with a penalty kick in the 15th minute. Poly would convert on the penalty, cutting the Hawk lead back to one.

  • Coach Knapp's squad continued to up the pressure, suffocating the Wildcat defense with multiple shots as the Hawks looked to push their lead back up to two.

  • A foul by the Wildcats led to a free kick for the Hawks in the opposing third. Mierek continued to facilitate the offense with high success, dropping a ball into the box that went over the crowd and perfectly fell in line with a lurking Grace Byrne (Lynbrook, N.Y.) who was able to place a shot into the upper left corner for the final score of the half.

  • The Royal Blue and White enjoyed a dominant first half, outshooting their opponents 7-1 and winning the corner advantage, 4-1.

  • Poly earned a goal kick and attempted to play it short, pressure from the Hawks caused an errant pass,  Byrne was able to take the ball from the nearby defender and work her way into the box. Byrne was met by a Wildcat in the box but despite the contact, she was able to evade the Poly defender and scored her second goal of the game to open up the second half.

  • The Hawks continued to restrict the Poly attack while they maintained possession in the midfield.

  • Genesis Gomez (Middletown, Pa.) capped off the offensive explosion with her first goal in a Hartwick uniform, capitalizing on a loose ball in the box and scoring in the 80th minute.

  • The Wildcats put one more goal on the scoreboard in the 87th minute but it would not be enough as the Hawks picked up their first conference win.

COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH BRIAN KNAPP

''Today showed our persistence and desire to be more clinical with our finishing. When you're getting the kind of service Jenna Mierek puts in, it just needs someone to go up and attack it. We did it last weekend and we did it again tonight. We are never happy to concede a couple goals but we'll look over film and see where we can improve. Today was about putting the ball in the back of the net and building some momentum going into this weekend and we did just that. I'm very proud of the full team effort today,"

UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS

The Hawks will hit the road to continue their Empire 8 slate, facing off against SUNY Brockport on Saturday, September 28th at 3PM.
