ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Hartwick Women's Soccer Team kicked off the 48th annual Mayor's Cup against the River Hawks of Susquehanna under heavy rain.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score: Susquehanna 2 Hartwick 1

  • Location: Oneonta, N.Y.

  • Records: Susquehanna (1-2, 0-0 Landmark), Hartwick (1-1-1, 0-0 Empire 8)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • The Hawks were met with a slight downpour from warmups, all throughout the duration of the match. Despite the weather conditions, Coach Knapp's squad was ready to begin the Mayor's Cup Tournament against the River Hawks.

  • Hartwick was faced with early pressure from Susquehanna, with the River Hawks creating an early chance that was cut short by an offsides call.

  • Susquehanna was able to put a shot on target and was tagged by another offsides call before Hartwick was able to create some forward progress and apply pressure themselves.

  • The first corner of the game went to the Hawks that put some stress on the opposition before they were able to clear the ball successfully.

  • With the River Hawks on the counter attack, they posted two shots in two minutes as they inched closer to a goal.

  • Meghan Perry (Otego, N.Y.) made a great full extension save to keep the game deadlocked at zero.

  • After a Hawk foul, the opposition made a dangerous push down the pitch and were able to find the back of the net before the goal was taken back due to another offsides call.

  • The near chance gave Hartwick a wake-up call, as they began to create pressure of their own, adding to the back and forth battle between the two teams

  • With a free kick being awarded to the Hawks just outside the box, they looked to capitalize as Addyson Galuski (Waterford, N.Y.) sent a wonderful lob into the box that clanked off the post and was met by a strike from Reilly Groff (Monroe, N.Y.) for the first score of the game at the 30 minute mark.

  • With 15 minutes left, the rain continued to pick up and slow down the pace of the game. The teams exchanged corners as the Hawks would go into the second half leading 1-0.

  • The second half was slow to start but the River Hawks would soon begin to test the Hartwick defense once again.

  • With the first shot of the half coming from Susquehanna, they equalized the game at the 54 minute mark, being able to score in a crowded box.

  • After exchanging corner kicks, Susquehanna would take the lead with a goal, ten minutes later.

  • The Hawks worked hard to tie up the game, disrupting the passing lanes and earned several corners.

  • Hartwick was able to muster a shot on goal but was turned away by the keeper, a corner proved to be the final attack for the Hawks as the clock worked against them, suffering a loss to Susquehanna.

COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH BRIAN KNAPP

"Today was a tough result to swallow. The game was back and forth without either team having too many clear cut chances. Getting a goal up going into the break, we knew Susquehanna would up the intensity and we'd have to match it. Unfortunately we switched off a couple times and conceded two goals that ended up being the deciding factor. There were plenty of positives to take from the game and always plenty to work on. Now it will be up to us to show how quickly we can bounce back from a tough result and show how resilient we are tomorrow against another quality opponent in Marywood."

UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS

The Hawks will return to Elmore Field to continue the annual Mayor's Cup Tournament,  on Sunday, September 8th against Marywood University at 12:00 PM.
